Christian Liturgy 101: How One Church Worshiped August 30, 2020

by Bobby Gilles

in Liturgy & Sermons

Welcome to Sojourn’s weekly worship music set list review & service recap. You’ll not only read a list of the songs we led, but also the readings and prayers from our liturgy. You can also watch the video stream of the whole service from our Facebook page or here below (you can also see a video of our sermon alone, from Vimeo).

Our liturgy is directed by Worship Director Justin Shaffer, in collaboration with our Creative Staff at Sojourn Church New Albany, our Liturgy writers, and worship staff at the other four Sojourn Collective churches in the Louisville area.

This Sunday Pastor Jonah Sage preached from Isaiah 58 in our series on racial justice and reconciliation, Family Matters. We begin with a short “countdown to the gathering” hosted by Deacon Kristen Gilles. To learn more about Sojourn Church, click here.

CALL TO WORSHIP:   Liturgist

Good morning sojourn! Welcome! I’m _____…

30 I will extol thee, O Lord; for thou hast lifted me up, and hast not made my foes to rejoice over me.

2 O Lord my God, I cried unto thee, and thou hast healed me.

3 O Lord, thou hast brought up my soul from the grave: thou hast kept me alive, that I should not go down to the pit.

4 Sing unto the Lord, O ye saints of his, and give thanks at the remembrance of his holiness.

5 For his anger endureth but a moment; in his favour is life: weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning.

6 And in my prosperity I said, I shall never be moved.

-Psalm 30:1-6 KJV

—Song 1: “We Shall Not Be Moved (Michael Spoken Word?)” Key, Leader

LAMENT:  Band Member

Lament injustice and ask the Lord to stir love and compassion within us…

—Song 2: “They Will Know We Are Christians By Our Love” Key, Leader

ASSURANCE & GIVING: Liturgist

Jesus is close to the suffering, we know this because he himself was rejected by men. Hear the word of the Lord…

The stone that the builders rejected

has now become the cornerstone.

This is the Lord’s doing,

and it is wonderful to see.

This is the day the Lord has made.

We will rejoice and be glad in it.

-Psalm 118:18-20 (NLT)

This stone, Jesus, was rejected by men, rejected by us… IS the Cornerstone, the foundation for God’s promise to save us. How amazing is it that God himself identified with us… he knows what it’s like to be rejected and even killed. But THEN Jesus rose and conquered the grave so that we can identify with him in his resurrection and life! Let us sing and rejoice in the Lord!

—Song 3: “Great Are You Lord” Key, Leader

PASSING OF THE PEACE: Band Member

The Lord has brought light where there was once darkness, tumbled walls and broken chains, and we stand as a church family united and one in Christ. Let us fully embrace the depth of this reality as we greet one another in the grace and peace God has given to us.
