Christian Liturgy 101: Pentecost Sunday 2020

by Bobby Gilles

in Liturgy & Sermons

Welcome to Sojourn’s weekly worship music set list review & service recap. You’ll not only read a list of the songs we led, but also the readings and prayers from our liturgy. You can also watch the video stream of the whole service from our Facebook page or here below (you can also see a video of our sermon alone, from Vimeo).

Our liturgy is directed by Worship Director Justin Shaffer, in collaboration with our Creative Staff at Sojourn Church New Albany, our Liturgy writers, and worship staff at the other four Sojourn Collective churches in the Louisville area.

This Sunday Pastor Jonah Sage preached from Philippians 1:1-11 in our series Prison Poems: Citizens Of Joy In Circumstances Of Suffering. We begin with a short “countdown to the gathering” hosted by Deacon Lindsey Blair and Pastor Bobby Gilles. To learn more about Sojourn Church, click here. In the midst of the Coronavirus/COVID-19 pandemic, we urged people to stay home and sing, pray, recite scripture, give, and listen to the sermon via our live stream on Facebook. And by early afternoon Sundays, we upload the sermon video and manuscript PDF to Rightnow Media.

CALL TO WORSHIP:   Liturgist

Themes: Brief Pentecost explanation/invitation, gratitude and thanksgiving, partnership, defending and affirming the Gospel,

‘I see that the Lord is always with me.

I will not be shaken, for he is right beside me.

26 No wonder my heart is glad,

and my tongue shouts his praises!

    My body rests in hope.

27 For you will not leave my soul among the dead

or allow your Holy One to rot in the grave.

28 You have shown me the way of life,

and you will fill me with the joy of your presence.’

-Acts 2:25b-28 NLT

—Song 2: “Psalm 34 (Taste and See)” Key, Leader

LAMENT:  Justin

Lord, this morning as we gather together-though apart-

We praise you that you see us, you know us, and you love us.

We also gather today with heavy hearts,

Lamenting the evil at work in our world.

We lament the racism and violence against the black community.

We lament the loss of your image bearers,

Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and George Floyd.

When we are apathetic to violence, forgive us.

When we are numb to compassion, soften our hearts.

When we are confused and bewildered,

Comfort us.

Be with us, Jesus.

Grant us the humility and the courage

To be your hands and feet to our neighbors

Pursuing justice, loving mercy, and walking humbly with you.

Come quickly, Lord Jesus. Amen.

—Song 3: “Give Us Clean Hands” Key, Leader
