in Liturgy & Sermons

Welcome to Sojourn’s weekly worship music set list review & service recap. You’ll not only read a list of the songs we led, but also the readings and prayers from our liturgy. You can also watch the video stream of the whole service from our Facebook page or here below (you can also see a video of our sermon alone, from Vimeo).

Our liturgy is directed by Worship Director Justin Shaffer, in collaboration with our Creative Staff at Sojourn Church New Albany, our Liturgy writers, and worship staff at the other four Sojourn Collective churches in the Louisville area.

This Sunday Pastor Travis McGowen preached from Philippians 1:12-26 in our series Prison Poems: Citizens Of Joy In Circumstances Of Suffering. We begin with a short “countdown to the gathering” hosted by Deacon Lindsey Blair and Pastor Bobby Gilles. To learn more about Sojourn Church, click here. In the midst of the Coronavirus/COVID-19 pandemic, we urged people to stay home and sing, pray, recite scripture, give, and listen to the sermon via our live stream on Facebook. And by early afternoon Sundays, we upload the sermon video and manuscript PDF to Rightnow Media.

CALL TO WORSHIP:   Liturgist

Themes:

Good morning and welcome to Sojourn New Albany! Today is Trinity Sunday, and though we worship God as the Father, Son and Holy Spirit everytime we gather, today we focus explicitly on the beauty, power, and the mystery of the triune God. Let’s read this together as we prepare to worship him, who exists in three persons throughout all eternity:

Sing a new song to the Lord!

Let the whole earth sing to the Lord!

Sing to the Lord; praise his name.

Each day proclaim the good news that he saves.

Let the heavens be glad, and the earth rejoice!

Let the sea and everything in it shout his praise!

Let the fields and their crops burst out with joy!

Let the trees of the forest sing for joy

before the Lord, for he is coming!

-Psalm 96:1-2,11-13

Hallelujah! Let’s sing together in joyful worship and adoration of our Lord!

—Song 2: “Doxology & All Creatures of Our God and King” Key, Leader

CONFESSION/LAMENT:  Band Member

Let’s spend a few moments in prayer and humbly acknowledge that things aren’t as they should be, that we need God to restore our hearts, and to restore the world.

[Space/silence for prayer]

Pray this with me:

Father, you have come to meet us as we turn to you.

Lord, have mercy.

Jesus, you died on the cross for our sins, and rose from the grave that we would have life to the fullest.

Lord, have mercy.

Holy Spirit, you fill us with life, peace, and power.

Lord, have mercy.

Amen.

—Song 3: “I Need Thee Every Hour” Key, Leader

ASSURANCE & GIVING: Liturgist

Hear this wonderful news:

In that day you will sing:

“I will praise you, O Lord!

You were angry with me, but not any more.

    Now you comfort me.

See, God has come to save me.

I will trust in him and not be afraid.

The Lord God is my strength and my song;

    he has given me victory.”

                                                                                                -Isaiah 12:1-2

Amen! He has indeed given us victory through Jesus, who made us right with God, forgiving our sins and giving us life! As a response to what he has done for us, let’s give and give generously as we sing of his great love for us!

—Song 4: “Here Is Love” Key, Leader

PASSING OF THE PEACE: Band Member

We have peace with God and also with each other. Pass that peace along through comment on the live feed or text message, and tell someone you love them.
