Christian Liturgy 101: How One Church Worshiped May 3, 2020

by Kristen Gilles

in Liturgy & Sermons

Welcome to Sojourn’s weekly worship music set list review & service recap. You’ll not only read a list of the songs we led, but also the readings and prayers from our liturgy. You can also watch the video stream of the whole service from our Facebook page or here below (you can also see a video of our sermon alone, from Vimeo).

Our liturgy is directed by Worship Director Justin Shaffer, in collaboration with our Creative Staff at Sojourn Church New Albany, our Liturgy writers, and worship staff at the other four Sojourn Collective churches in the Louisville area. This week’s liturgy was written by Rebekah Carroll and Janna McCarty.

This Sunday Pastor Bobby Gilles preached from Matthew 17:1-11 (the Transfiguration of Jesus) in our series Come Home: Full Life In A Whole Church. To learn more about Sojourn Church, click here. In the midst of the Coronavirus/COVID-19 pandemic, we urged people to stay home and sing, pray, recite scripture, give, and listen to the sermon via our live stream on Facebook. And by early afternoon Sundays, we upload the sermon video and manuscript PDF to Rightnow Media.

CALL TO WORSHIP:   Liturgist

Good morning! Welcome to Sojourn from wherever you are watching. We’re so grateful to worship together with you today! I’m Justin, one of the deacons here and we want to invite you to join us in worshiping our Living God who has a universe to run, yet he sees you and knows you and is inviting you to be a part of His story. He hears and sees our praise and adoration whether we are in a church building or at home.

1 Come, let us sing for joy to the LORD;

Let us shout aloud to the Rock of our salvation

2 Let us come before him with thanksgiving

and extol him with music and song

3 For the LORD is the great God,

the great King!

6 Come, let us bow down in worship,

let us kneel before the LORD our Maker;

7 for he is our God and we are the people of his pasture,

the flock under his care.                                                                                                                        -Psalm 95:1-7

Let us praise the One that meets us where we are and delights in us.”

—Song 2: “How Deep the Father’s Love For Us” Key, Leader

CONFESSION/LAMENT:  Band Member

The Father’s love is indeed deep for each and every one of us, yet we so easily turn our attention to lesser things… we forget the good things he’s JUST done, our understanding is confused, and we do things out of our own selfishness.

2 God looks down from heaven

on all mankind

to see if there are any who understand,

and who seek God.

3 Everyone has turned away, all have become

corrupt;

there is no one who does good,

not even one.                                                                                                        -Psalm 53:2-3 NIV

Yet God pursues us. He meets us where we are and draws us to himself. His goodness and mercy draws our hearts to his.

—Song 3: “There is a Peace” Key, Leader

ASSURANCE & GIVING: Liturgist

Our lives are filled with ups and downs and God delights in hearing from us… he loves and cares for each one of you! Let’s turn our eyes to our only true source of help!

1 I lift up my eyes to the mountains-

Where does my help come from? 2 My help comes from the LORD,

The Maker of heaven and earth. 3 He will not let your foot slip –

He who watches over you will not slumber                                                                              -Psalm 121:1-3

Thanks be to God!

When we give sacrificially, we recognize that the Father is the giver of every good and perfect gift. He wants to partner with us when the storehouses are filled or are empty. As we take a moment to give with a grateful heart, let us lift our voices and sing to the LORD, our provider.

—Song 4: “His Eye is On the Sparrow/You Never Let Go” Key, Leader

PASSING OF PEACE: Band Member

Hear this:

…may the Lord of peace himself give you peace at all times in every way. The Lord be with you all.              -2 Thessalonians 3:16a ESV

Jesus has given us peace… he sustains that peace in every drought and storm. As we long for the day we can hang out and greet one another face to face, let’s take a moment to send a text a thoughtful text or make a call, comment on the facebook feed, hug your family sitting next to you and tell them you love them 🙂

BENEDICTION: Liturgist

We end our gatherings with a benediction… a blessing for the road…  so Church, raise your hands and receive this:

24 The LORD bless you and keep you; 25 The LORD make his face shine on you

and be gracious to you; 26 The Lord turn his face toward you

and give you peace. -Numbers 6:24-26

[Go now in the name of the father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Peace be with you!]
