in Liturgy & Sermons

Welcome to Sojourn’s weekly worship music set list review & service recap. You’ll not only read a list of the songs we led, but also the readings and prayers from our liturgy. You can also watch the video stream of the whole service from our Facebook page or here below (you can also see a video of our sermon alone, from Vimeo).

Our liturgy is written by Worship Director Justin Shaffer, in collaboration with our Creative Team at Sojourn Church New Albany and worship staff at the other four Sojourn Collective churches in the Louisville area.

This Sunday Pastor Jonah Sage preached from Matthew 16:1-12 in our series Come Home: Full Life In A Whole Church. To learn more about Sojourn Church, click here. In the midst of the Coronavirus/COVID-19 pandemic, we urged people to stay home and sing, pray, recite scripture, give, and listen to the sermon via our live stream on Facebook. And by early afternoon Sundays, we upload the sermon video and manuscript PDF to Rightnow Media.

CALL TO WORSHIP:   Justin & Ryan

Good morning! Welcome to sojourn! When I think about this dynamic… a few of us here in a mostly empty room… our church scattered through southern Indiana in our homes… I’m reminded of the apostle Paul when he says in his letter to the Philippians: “God is my witness, how I yearn for you all with the affection of Christ Jesus.” In fact, no less than 8 times in his various letters Paul makes similar expressions of longing to be bodily together with his brothers and sisters… it’s a BIG DEAL. At the same time, I can say with a straight face: “Welcome to sojourn” because in another very real sense, God has gifted us with means to stay connected from afar just like he has ALWAYS done.

And so we’re going to continue to rally around God’s word, day after day, until we can be together again.

And by that word, we can say things that we wouldn’t have the power to affect, or even to MEAN on our own… this is the power of God’s living word to change us… so we can say this boldly together:

 1-2 Hallelujah!

    O my soul, praise God!

All my life long I’ll praise God,

singing songs to my God as long as I live.

-Psalm 146:1-2 The Message

Let’s all sing together!

—Song 2: “Revelation Song” Key, Meg

CONFESSION/LAMENT:  Justin

Hear the word of the Lord:

3-9 Don’t put your life in the hands of experts

who know nothing of life, of salvation life.

Mere humans don’t have what it takes;

when they die, their projects die with them.

Instead, get help from the God of Jacob,

put your hope in God and know real blessing!

God made sky and soil,

sea and all the fish in it.

He always does what he says—

he defends the wronged,

he feeds the hungry.

God frees prisoners—

he gives sight to the blind,

he lifts up the fallen.

God loves good people, protects strangers,

takes the side of orphans and widows,

but makes short work of the wicked.

10 God’s in charge—always.

-Psalm 146:3-20 The Message

[Spoken Text]

—Song 3: “In the Hours” Key, Meg

ASSURANCE & GIVING:

Hear this stunningly beautiful drama play out:

6 For when we were still without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. 7 For scarcely for a righteous man will one die; yet perhaps for a good man someone would even dare to die. 8 But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. 9 Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from wrath through Him. 10 For if when we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life. 11 And not only that, but we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received the reconciliation.

-Romans 5:6-11 NKJV

…so let’s rejoice! Clap your hands in your living room… now that your neighbors think you’re totally nuts for clapping at your computer when there are no live sporting events happening 😉

—Song 4: “What a Friend is Jesus” Key, Justin

PASSING OF THE PEACE: Meg

…something a little different… take a moment to thank God for his friendship… now let’s greet one another by commenting, via text or phone, etc 🙂

—Song 5: “You Are the Living Word” Key, All

ANNOUNCEMENTS: Reader

—Song 6: “King of my Heart” Key, Meg

BENEDICTION: Justin

20 He who testifies to these things says, “Yes, I am coming soon.”

Amen. Come, Lord Jesus.

21 The grace of the Lord Jesus be with God’s people. Amen. [Peace be with you!]
