in Liturgy & Sermons

Welcome to Sojourn’s weekly worship music set list review & service recap. You’ll not only read a list of the songs we led, but also the readings and prayers from our liturgy. And if you’d like to see how we incorporate liturgical art and lead the responsive readings, watch the embedded video of our entire service, or check it out on the Sojourn New Albany Facebook page. Our liturgy is written by worship director Justin Shaffer in collaboration with worship directors at other Sojourn churches. This week we had a bluegrass band. And Pastor Travis McGowan preached from Jonah 1 as we began our new Jonah series. Learn more about Sojourn Community Church here.

CALL TO WORSHIP

Good morning and welcome to Sojourn! In the midst of our busy and chaotic lives, the Lord invites us to come to Him and find peace and rest, because He is a gracious God.  Hear the word of the Lord.

“Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls.  For my yoke is easy to bear, and the burden I give you is light.”

-Matthew 11:28-30

Hear this invitation from the Lord to enjoy his rest, and worship our comforting King, let us sing!

CONFESSION/Lament

Pray with me:

Lord, you invite us to rest and trust in you.

And yet we hurry, and refuse your rest,

Forgive us, Lord,

for our restless spirits,

our restless desires,

our restless schedules.

Change our hearts, Lord,

So we can rest in Your son.

Write the comfort of the gospel on our hearts

so we can draw near to Jesus,

cease our striving, and know Your peace.

Amen.

Amazing Grace written by John Newton.

ASSURANCE/GIVING

Our Great High Priest, Jesus, identifies with our weakness and lovingly invites us to draw near to Him, to trust in Him and find rest. Let us declare this truth together:

…Since we have a great High Priest who has entered heaven, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to what we believe. This High Priest of ours understands our weaknesses, for he faced all of the same testings we do, yet he did not sin.  -Hebrews 4:14-15

His strength is always present in our weakness, and His perfect life and work provides us with eternal hope.  Let’s continue to celebrate that as the giving buckets are passed around.

PASSING OF THE PEACE

The power of God that sustains us and gives us hope in this life is the same power that unites his church as family. As we greet each other today, let’s do so remembering that the peace we can share with one another is possible because of the peace we have with God through Christ.
