Christian Liturgy 101: How One Church Worshiped 6-26-22

by Bobby Gilles

in Liturgy & Sermons

Welcome to Sojourn’s weekly worship music set list review & service recap. You’ll not only read a list of the songs we led but also the readings and prayers from our liturgy. You can also watch the video stream of the full service from our Facebook page (see a video of our sermon alone below).

Worship Director Justin Shaffer directs our liturgy, collaborating with our Creative Staff at Sojourn Church New Albany and our Liturgy writing team (Rebekah Carroll, Ryan Marsh, Libby Thorngate, and Lindsey Blair).

This week we celebrated Trinity Sunday, and Pastor Ronnie Martin from Substance Church in Ashland, Ohio preached from Philippians 3 in our summer sermon series, The One That Changed Me (each week, a different preacher will preach on a text that changed them or has become foundational to who they are in Christ).

—Prelude: “Heaven” Key, Leader

CALL TO WORSHIP:   Liturgist

7 I will bless the Lord who guides me;

even at night my heart instructs me.

8 I know the Lord is always with me.

I will not be shaken, for he is right beside me.

9 No wonder my heart is glad, and I rejoice.

    My body rests in safety.

10 For you will not leave my soul among the dead

or allow your holy one to rot in the grave.

11 You will show me the way of life,

granting me the joy of your presence

and the pleasures of living with you forever.

  -Psalm 16:7-11 NLT

—Song 2: “He Reigns” Key, Leader

CONFESSION/LAMENT:  Band Member

1 I cry out to God; yes, I shout.

Oh, that God would listen to me!

2 When I was in deep trouble,

    I searched for the Lord.

All night long I prayed, with hands lifted toward heaven,

but my soul was not comforted.

11 But then I recall all you have done, O Lord;

I remember your wonderful deeds of long ago.

12 They are constantly in my thoughts.

I cannot stop thinking about your mighty works.

13 O God, your ways are holy.

Is there any god as mighty as you?

14 You are the God of great wonders!

You demonstrate your awesome power among the nations.

15 By your strong arm, you redeemed your people,

-Psalm 77:1-2, 11-15a NLT

—Song 3: “May Your Power Rest On Me” Key, Leader

ASSURANCE & GIVING: Liturgist

Hear this glorious assurance:

16 Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. 17 For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. 18 So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.

         -2 Corinthians 4:16-18

—Song 4: “The Love Of God (makes sure it’s not too slow and and somber)” Key, Leader

PEACE: Band Member

Let’s take a moment to greet one another in God’s grace and peace

BENEDICTION: Liturgist

Now may our Lord Jesus Christ himself, and God our Father, who loved us and gave us eternal comfort and good hope through grace, comfort your hearts and establish them in every good work and word.
