Welcome to Sojourn’s weekly worship music set list review & service recap. You’ll not only read a list of the songs we led but also the readings and prayers from our liturgy. You can also watch the video stream of the full service from our Facebook page (see a video of our sermon alone below).

Worship Director Justin Shaffer directs our liturgy, collaborating with our Creative Staff at Sojourn Church New Albany and our Liturgy writing team (Rebekah Carroll, Ryan Marsh, Libby Thorngate, and Lindsey Blair).

This week we celebrated Pentecost Sunday, and Pastor Bobby Gilles preached from Acts 2:1-8.

CALL TO WORSHIP:   Liturgist

Good morning and welcome! We’re so glad you’re here today! Today is Pentecost Sunday, which commemorates the coming of the Holy Spirit to the Apostles and first followers of Jesus. That same Spirit in Acts chapter 2 who came in a windstorm from heaven, appeared as flames, and settled on those believers is the same Spirit who raised Jesus from the grave, and it’s the same Spirit who is in those who believe and confess that Jesus is Lord. Since we are united in the Holy Spirit, let’s join our voices as one as we read the Word aloud:

Let all that I am praise the Lord.

O Lord my God, how great you are!

    You are robed with honor and majesty.

2     You are dressed in a robe of light.

You stretch out the starry curtain of the heavens;

3     you lay out the rafters of your home in the rain clouds.

You make the clouds your chariot;

    you ride upon the wings of the wind.

4 The winds are your messengers;

    flames of fire are your servants.

May the glory of the Lord continue forever!

    The Lord takes pleasure in all he has made!

32 The earth trembles at his glance;

    the mountains smoke at his touch.

33 I will sing to the Lord as long as I live.

    I will praise my God to my last breath!

34 May all my thoughts be pleasing to him,

    for I rejoice in the Lord.

-Psalm 104:1-4, 31-34 NLT

Amen! Let’s sing our praises to our glorious God!

CONFESSION/LAMENT:  Band Member

Soon after the Holy Spirit filled the first followers of Jesus, Peter retold this prophecy from Joel:

“Then, after doing all those things,

    I will pour out my Spirit upon all people.

Your sons and daughters will prophesy.

    Your old men will dream dreams,

    and your young men will see visions.

In those days I will pour out my Spirit

    even on servants—men and women alike.

And I will cause wonders in the heavens and on the earth—

    blood and fire and columns of smoke.

The sun will become dark,

    and the moon will turn blood red

    before that great and terrible day of the Lord arrives.

But everyone who calls on the name of the Lord

    will be saved.

-Joel 2:28-32a NLT

Let’s continue to sing to our God whose name is so great, that we are saved by calling on Him.

—Song 3: “Your Great Name” Key, Leader

ASSURANCE & GIVING: Liturgist

Hear this word of our Lord Jesus:

Jesus replied, “All who love me will do what I say. My Father will love them, and we will come and make our home with each of them. Anyone who doesn’t love me will not obey me. And remember, my words are not my own. What I am telling you is from the Father who sent me. I am telling you these things now while I am still with you. But when the Father sends the Advocate as my representative—that is, the Holy Spirit—he will teach you everything and will remind you of everything I have told you.

“I am leaving you with a gift—peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So don’t be troubled or afraid. Remember what I told you: I am going away, but I will come back to you again.

-John 14:23-28a

What a hope we have in Jesus. He has given us the gift of His Spirit, but that’s not all. He is coming back again soon and will make all things new! And so we wait patiently, believing that he is faithful and true. Let’s sing.
