Christian Liturgy 101: How One Church Worshiped 5-1-22

by Bobby Gilles

in Liturgy & Sermons

Welcome to Sojourn’s weekly worship music set list review & service recap. You’ll not only read a list of the songs we led but also the readings and prayers from our liturgy. You can also watch the video stream of the full service from our Facebook page (see a video of our sermon alone below).

Worship Director Justin Shaffer directs our liturgy, collaborating with our Creative Staff at Sojourn Church New Albany and our Liturgy writing team (Rebekah Carroll, Ryan Marsh, Libby Thorngate, and Lindsey Blair).

This week we celebrated Easter Sunday, and Pastor Jonah Sage preached from John 20:24-29. This is from our Eastertide series, Resurrection Responses.

—Prelude: “Refuge” Key, Leader

CALL TO WORSHIP: Liturgist
Themes: Jesus is not found in the right places; he’s found in the honest ones.

4 Sing the praises of the Lord, you his faithful people;
praise his holy name.
5 For his anger lasts only a moment,
but his favor lasts a lifetime;
weeping may stay for the night,
but rejoicing comes in the morning.
-Psalm 30:4-5 NIV

In 1-2 Sentences: “”

—Song 2: “You Are The Living Word” Key, Leader

CONFESSION/LAMENT: Band Member
[Spoken Text]

1 I will exalt you, Lord,
for you lifted me out of the depths
and did not let my enemies gloat over me.
2 Lord my God, I called to you for help,
and you healed me.
3 You, Lord, brought me up from the realm of the dead;
you spared me from going down to the pit.
6 When I felt secure, I said,
“I will never be shaken.”
7 Lord, when you favored me,
you made my royal mountain stand firm;
but when you hid your face,
I was dismayed.
8 To you, Lord, I called;
to the Lord I cried for mercy:
9 “What is gained if I am silenced,
if I go down to the pit?
Will the dust praise you?
Will it proclaim your faithfulness?
10 Hear, Lord, and be merciful to me;
Lord, be my help.”
11 You turned my wailing into dancing;
you removed my sackcloth and clothed me with joy,
12 that my heart may sing your praises and not be silent.
Lord my God, I will praise you forever.
-Psalm 30:1-3, 6-12 NIV

[Spoken Text]

—Song 3: “Chase Away My Unbelief” Key, Leader

ASSURANCE & GIVING: Liturgist
Hear this assurance that Jesus gives to us:

“No, we don’t know, Lord,” Thomas said. “We have no idea where you are going, so how can we know the way?”
Jesus told him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me. If you had really known me, you would know who my Father is. From now on, you do know him and have seen him!”
– John 14:5-7

Jesus has all authority and all power to bring us close to God, to redeem us and make us new in his Kingdom. He himself is the way to the Father, he’s the truth and the life. What good news this is. We get to live with true hope! This is worth singing about, Amen?! Let’s lift our voices together!

—Song 4: “Power to Redeem” Key, Leader

PEACE: Band Member
Each week we greet each other and we take time to chat. It’s a simple thing, yet it’s so significant because of who we are in Christ. As you say hello to someone, remember that God has given us peace with Himself and with each other. Peace be with you!
