by Bobby Gilles

in Liturgy & Sermons

Welcome to Sojourn’s weekly worship music set list review & service recap. You’ll not only read a list of the songs we led, but also the readings and prayers from our liturgy. You can also watch the video stream of the whole service from our Facebook page here  (you can also see a video of our sermon alone, below).

Our liturgy is directed by Worship Director Justin Shaffer, in collaboration with our Creative Staff at Sojourn Church New Albany, and our Liturgy writing team (Rebekah Carroll, Ryan Marsh, and Lindsey Blair).

This Sunday Pastor Jonah Sage preached from Genesis 6:1-4 in our series entitled Desecrated.

CALL TO WORSHIP:   Liturgist

Good morning, Sojourn. We’re so glad that you are here to worship alongside us this morning. Today is such a special day because we are launching our Sunday Bible Fellowship today! Folks who attend the 11:00 service are meeting right now, and we hope that you’ll all join us in the church hall at 11:00 as we explore the Word together.

Because, let’s be honest, sometimes it’s easy to forget that the God we serve is so much bigger than we can imagine. We like to put him into an auditorium-sized box, but He is the creator of the universe who has always been and always will be. And the most incredible thing is that he has had a plan from the beginning – A plan to connect with us, to dwell with us, and to make a way for us to live as his children. Let’s prepare our hearts to worship our great god. Please read the underlined portions with me.

1     Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth!

2     Serve the Lord with gladness!

Come into his presence with singing!

3 Know that the Lord, he is God!

    It is he who made us, and we are his;

we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.

4 Enter his gates with thanksgiving,

and his courts with praise!

Give thanks to him; bless his name!

5 For the Lord is good;

    his steadfast love endures forever,

    and his faithfulness to all generations.

Psalm 100: 1-5 (ESV)

Let’s worship.

—Song 2: “Refuge” Key, Leader

CONFESSION/LAMENT:  Band Member

Since the beginning of humanity, God knew what was coming. He watched the stubborn and “stiff-necked” people try and fail. He has never been surprised by the way things happen. Heart-broken, but not surprised. And he is not surprised by us or our sins. Let us confess this together:

Why, Lord, must evil seem to get its way?

We confess that our sin is deeply shameful;

It is too heavy to bear, too real to hide, and too deep to undo.

Forgive us for we are afraid to even admit out loud what we have thought, said, and done.

Search our hearts and draw out the darkness from within.

Set us free from a past we cannot change.

Open to us a future in which we can be changed.

Give us grace so that we can grow in your likeness.

-Adapted from The Worship Sourcebook

Amen.

—Song 3: “Satisfied in You (Psalm 42)” Key, Leader

ASSURANCE & GIVING: Liturgist

Hear this assurance this morning:

8 God is all mercy and grace

not quick to anger, is rich in love.

9 God is good to one and all;

everything he does is soaked through with grace.

13 God always does what he says,

    and is gracious in everything he does.

14 God gives a hand to those down on their luck,

gives a fresh start to those ready to quit.

17 Everything God does is right—

the trademark on all his works is love.

18 God’s there, listening for all who pray,

for all who pray and mean it.

19 He does what’s best for those who fear him—

hears them call out, and saves them.

–Psalm 145: 8-9, 13b-14, 17-19 The MSG

In the ultimate act of mercy and grace, God sent us his son to take on the burden and punishment of our sin. He did this out of his love for us and his desire to have right relationships with us. “Everything God does is right – the trademark on all his works is love.”

Let’s sing to our god who cares for us – who has made a way for us – who chose to rescue us.

—Song 4: “You Never Let Go” Key, Leader

PEACE: Band Member

God created a way of peace for his people, not only peace with him but also with one another. Let’s share that peace now.
