Christian Liturgy 101: How One Church Worshiped October 10, 2021

by Bobby Gilles

in Liturgy & Sermons

Welcome to Sojourn’s weekly worship music set list review & service recap. You’ll not only read a list of the songs we led, but also the readings and prayers from our liturgy. You can also watch the video stream of the whole service from our Facebook page or here below (you can also see a video of our sermon alone, from Vimeo).

Our liturgy is directed by Worship Director Justin Shaffer, in collaboration with our Creative Staff at Sojourn Church New Albany, our Liturgy writers, and worship staff at the other four Sojourn Collective churches in the Louisville area.

This Sunday Pastor Jonah Sage preached from Genesis 2:18-25 in our series Sacred. Deacon Lindsey Blair was our Lector.

—Prelude: “How Can the Heavens Hold You” Key, Justin

CALL TO WORSHIP:   Liturgist

27-28 From the four corners of the earth

people are coming to their senses,

are running back to God.

Long-lost families

are falling on their faces before him.

God has taken charge;

from now on he has the last word.

29 All the power-mongers are before him

All the poor and powerless, too

Along with those who never got it together

30-31 Our children and their children

will get in on this

As the word is passed along

from parent to child.

Babies not yet conceived

will hear the good news—

that God does what he says.

-Psalm 22:27-31 The Message

—Song 2: “Promises” Key, Justin, Meg, Ryan

CONFESSION:  Band Member

[Spoken Text]

1 Return, O Israel, to the Lord your God,

    for your sins have brought you down.

2 Bring your confessions, and return to the Lord.

Say to him,

“Forgive all our sins and graciously receive us,

    so that we may offer you our praises.

3 Assyria cannot save us,

nor can our warhorses.

Never again will we say to the idols we have made,

    ‘You are our gods.’

No, in you alone

    do the orphans find mercy.”

-Hosea 14:1-3 NLT

[Spoken Text]

—Song 3: “God Alone” Key, Ryan

Brief transition

4 The Lord says,

“Then I will heal you of your faithlessness;

my love will know no bounds,

for my anger will be gone forever.

5 I will be to Israel

like a refreshing dew from heaven.

Israel will blossom like the lily;

it will send roots deep into the soil

like the cedars in Lebanon.

6 Its branches will spread out like beautiful olive trees,

as fragrant as the cedars of Lebanon.

7 My people will again live under my shade.

They will flourish like grain and blossom like grapevines.

They will be as fragrant as the wines of Lebanon.

8 “O Israel, stay away from idols!

I am the one who answers your prayers and cares for you.

I am like a tree that is always green;

all your fruit comes from me.”

-Hosea 14:4-8 NLT

—Song 4: “I Have to Believe” Key, Meg

 May the God of endurance and encouragement grant you to live in such harmony with one another, in accord with Christ Jesus, that together you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. [Go in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit! Peace be with you!]              -Romans 15:5-6
