Christian Liturgy 101: How One Church Worshiped September 26, 2021

by Bobby Gilles

in Liturgy & Sermons

Welcome to Sojourn’s weekly worship music set list review & service recap. You’ll not only read a list of the songs we led, but also the readings and prayers from our liturgy. You can also watch the video stream of the whole service from our Facebook page or here below (you can also see a video of our sermon alone, from Vimeo).

Our liturgy is directed by Worship Director Justin Shaffer, in collaboration with our Creative Staff at Sojourn Church New Albany, our Liturgy writers, and worship staff at the other four Sojourn Collective churches in the Louisville area.

This Sunday Pastor Jonah Sage preached from Genesis 1:26-31 in our series Sacred. Jennifer Pisani was our Lector.

—Prelude: “My Maker and My King” Key, Kara

CALL TO WORSHIP:   Liturgist

Themes: Creative energy flowing from God’s Word, an inspirational God, teaming with diversity, the hand of God particularly on each of us, this church, etc

3 [The heavens] have no speech, they use no words;

no sound is heard from them.

4 Yet their voice goes out into all the earth,

their words to the ends of the world.

In the heavens God has pitched a tent for the sun.

5     It is like a bridegroom coming out of his chamber,

like a champion rejoicing to run his course.

6 It rises at one end of the heavens

and makes its circuit to the other;

nothing is deprived of its warmth.

-Psalm 19:3-6 NIV

Let’s join OUR voices and praise him!

—Song 2: “Praise to the Lord the Almighty” Key, Kim and Kara

CONFESSION/LAMENT:  Band Member

Heat the word of the Lord:

1 God presides over heaven’s court;

he pronounces judgment on the heavenly beings:

2 “How long will you hand down unjust decisions

by favoring the wicked? Interlude

3 “Give justice to the poor and the orphan;

uphold the rights of the oppressed and the destitute.

4 Rescue the poor and helpless;

deliver them from the grasp of evil people.

5 But these oppressors know nothing;

they are so ignorant!

They wander about in darkness,

while the whole world is shaken to the core.

6 I say, ‘You are gods;

you are all children of the Most High.

7 But you will die like mere mortals

and fall like every other ruler.’”

8 Rise up, O God, and judge the earth,

for all the nations belong to you.

-Psalm 82 NLT

—Song 3: “Shine Into Our Night” Key, Justin

ASSURANCE & GIVING: Liturgist

Hear what the Lord has done for his people:

8 God saved you by his grace when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this; it is a gift from God. 9 Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it. 10 For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.                                                                                                  -Ephesians 2:8-9 NLT

1 John 3:1-3

—Song 4: “Jireh” Key, Justin and Ryan

PEACE: Band Member

3 See how very much our Father loves us, for he calls us his children, and that is what we are! But the people who belong to this world don’t recognize that we are God’s children because they don’t know him. 2 Dear friends, we are already God’s children, but he has not yet shown us what we will be like when Christ appears. But we do know that we will be like him, for we will see him as he really is. 3 And all who have this eager expectation will keep themselves pure, just as he is pure.                                                                                                                                             -1 John 3:1-3 NLT

Let’s greet one another in grace and peace

BENEDICTION: Liturgist

Creator God—

as we return now to our homes, workplaces, and communities,

may Your Spirit open our eyes anew

to the vastness and splendor of Your beauty all around us.

May we hear, and smell, and see, and touch

Your glory, evident in all of Your creation.

Above all, let us see Your beauty

even in the brokenness of our brothers and sisters—

all of them, created in Your image,

and waiting to experience that redemption that comes

only through Christ Jesus our Lord.

Go and cultivate beauty in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Peace be with you!
