in Liturgy & Sermons

Welcome to Sojourn’s weekly worship music set list review & service recap. You’ll not only read a list of the songs we led, but also the readings and prayers from our liturgy. You can also watch the video stream of the whole service from our Facebook page or here below (you can also see a video of our sermon alone, from Vimeo).

Our liturgy is directed by Worship Director Justin Shaffer, in collaboration with our Creative Staff at Sojourn Church New Albany, our Liturgy writers, and worship staff at the other four Sojourn Collective churches in the Louisville area.

This Sunday Pastor Scott Long preached from John 17:18-23. Pastor Scott is the church planter of south-central Louisville’s newest church, Highview Central. During the service we commissioned our former Connect Director Michael Miller and his wife Jordan to help serve in this new church plant. Michael will serve as Minister to Students.

CALL TO WORSHIP:   Darian

Good morning, welcome to Sojourn. My name is Darian Sanders and I want to welcome you. If you’re visiting us for the first time we are glad you are here, its my first time too ;-)! If it’s okay we’d love to connect with you following this service and we can share how to do that later. In the meantime, thanks for being here and we hope today is a blessing to you.

Church family, let’s begin this morning with a posture of humility before a Holy God.

Our God calls sinners to himself, but not only does He call us, He then changes us.

So my prayer for us today is that in one way or another, we may experience the transforming work of the Spirit among us. Amen? So let’s read this from psalm 51:

God, create a clean heart for me and renew a steadfast spirit within me.

-Psalm 51:10

Let’s pray together:

“Father, we come before you and we don’t want to leave this place the way we came in. Work in us today. We know that all we need today comes from you, not ourselves. Empty us, fill us with Your Spirit. Amen.”

—Song 2: “Grande Eres Dios (Great Are You Lord)” Key, Darian

CONFESSION/LAMENT:  Band Member

9 Fear the Lord, you his holy people,

for those who fear him lack nothing.

10 The lions may grow weak and hungry,

but those who seek the Lord lack no good thing.

11 Come, my children, listen to me;

I will teach you the fear of the Lord.

12 Whoever of you loves life

and desires to see many good days,

13 keep your tongue from evil

and your lips from telling lies.

14 Turn from evil and do good;

seek peace and pursue it.

-Psalm 34:9-14 NIV

—Song 3: “Amazing Grace” Key, Trade verses

ASSURANCE & GIVING: Liturgist

Hear this stunning assurance:

Now that we are set right with God by means of this sacrificial death, the consummate blood sacrifice, there is no longer a question of being at odds with God in any way. If, when we were at our worst, we were put on friendly terms with God by the sacrificial death of his Son, now that we’re at our best, just think of how our lives will expand and deepen by means of his resurrection life! Now that we have actually received this amazing friendship with God, we are no longer content to simply say it in plodding prose. We sing and shout our praises to God through Jesus, the Messiah!

-Romans 5:9-11 (MSG)

Let’s respond in worship!

—Song 4: “Raise Our Song (In Jesus’ Name)” Key, Justin

PEACE: Band Member

Let’s greet one another in the grace and peace that belongs to God’s children because of his Son, Jesus 🙂

BENEDICTION: Michael Miller

We end our services with a benediction, a “blessing for the road.” If you’d like to participate, please extend your hands and receive this blessing!

“As you sent me into the world, I also have sent them into the world. May they all be one, as you, Father, are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us, so that the world may believe you sent me.”

 -John 17:18, 21 CSB

When the Lord tells you to move, move brother, move sister. Not because it’s going to be an adventure. It may feel excruciating. Deny yourself and follow him because it will make you more like him. Go now in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Peace be with you!
