in Liturgy & Sermons

Welcome to Sojourn’s weekly worship music set list review & service recap. You’ll not only read a list of the songs we led, but also the readings and prayers from our liturgy. You can also watch the video stream of the whole service from our Facebook page or here below (you can also see a video of our sermon alone, from Vimeo).

Our liturgy is directed by Worship Director Justin Shaffer, in collaboration with our Creative Staff at Sojourn Church New Albany, our Liturgy writers, and worship staff at the other four Sojourn Collective churches in the Louisville area.

This Sunday Pastor Jonah Sage preached Ecclesiastes 9:13-10:20 in our series Wise. To learn more about Sojourn Church, click here.

CALL TO WORSHIP: Liturgist
Good morning! Welcome to sojourn!

1 I will sing of the Lord’s great love forever;
with my mouth I will make your faithfulness known
through all generations.
2 I will declare that your love stands firm forever,
that you have established your faithfulness in heaven itself.
-Psalm 89:1-2

—Song 2: “Bless the Lord (Son of Man)” Key, Ryan

CONFESSION: Band Member
Let’s pray along together as Meg reads Psalm 51… (music playing underneath)

1 Have mercy on me, O God,
because of your unfailing love.
Because of your great compassion,
blot out the stain of my sins.
2 Wash me clean from my guilt.
Purify me from my sin.
3 For I recognize my rebellion;
it haunts me day and night.
4 Against you, and you alone, have I sinned;
I have done what is evil in your sight.
You will be proved right in what you say,
and your judgment against me is just.
5 For I was born a sinner—
yes, from the moment my mother conceived me.
6 But you desire honesty from the womb,
teaching me wisdom even there.
7 Purify me from my sins, and I will be clean;
wash me, and I will be whiter than snow.
8 Oh, give me back my joy again;
you have broken me—
now let me rejoice.
9 Don’t keep looking at my sins.
Remove the stain of my guilt.
10 Create in me a clean heart, O God.
Renew a loyal spirit within me.
11 Do not banish me from your presence,
and don’t take your Holy Spirit from me.
12 Restore to me the joy of your salvation,
and make me willing to obey you.
-Psalm 51:1-12 NLT

—Song 3: “At the Foot of the Cross” Key, Meg

ASSURANCE & GIVING: Liturgist
Hear this glorious assurance through the prophet Isaiah, fulfilled in our Lord Jesus:

1-7 The Spirit of God, the Master, is on me
because God anointed me.
He sent me to preach good news to the poor,
heal the heartbroken,
Announce freedom to all captives,
pardon all prisoners.
God sent me to announce the year of his grace—
a celebration of God’s destruction of our enemies—
and to comfort all who mourn,
To care for the needs of all who mourn in Zion,
give them bouquets of roses instead of ashes,
Messages of joy instead of news of doom,
a praising heart instead of a languid spirit.
Rename them “Oaks of Righteousness”
planted by God to display his glory.
They’ll rebuild the old ruins,
raise a new city out of the wreckage.
They’ll start over on the ruined cities,
take the rubble left behind and make it new.
-Isaiah 61:1-5 The Message

—Song 4: “You Are the Living Word” Key, Ryan

PASSING OF THE PEACE: Justin

BENEDICTION: Liturgist
Jesus is gently and patiently healing his church; once poor needy fools, he has made us his glory, renewing us into his image. Brothers and sisters, go now, filled with His transforming presence and share it with your friends, family, and neighbors. Go in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Peace be with you!
