in Liturgy & Sermons

Welcome to Sojourn’s weekly worship music set list review & service recap. You’ll not only read a list of the songs we led, but also the readings and prayers from our liturgy. You can also watch the video stream of the whole service from our Facebook page or here below (you can also see a video of our sermon alone, from Vimeo).

Our liturgy is directed by Worship Director Justin Shaffer, in collaboration with our Creative Staff at Sojourn Church New Albany, our Liturgy writers, and worship staff at the other four Sojourn Collective churches in the Louisville area.

This Sunday Pastor Jonah Sage preached Ecclesiastes 7:1-14 in our series Wise. To learn more about Sojourn Church, click here.

—Prelude: “Lord You’re Mighty” Key, Leader

CALL TO WORSHIP:   Liturgist

Themes: God’s limitlessness & our limitations, other contrasting attributes… yet imago Dei… limitations are so part and parcel to being human that the Lord of all creation submitted himself to his own created order…

5-8 Think of yourselves the way Christ Jesus thought of himself. He had equal status with God but didn’t think so much of himself that he had to cling to the advantages of that status no matter what. Not at all. When the time came, he set aside the privileges of deity and took on the status of a slave, became human! Having become human, he stayed human. It was an incredibly humbling process. He didn’t claim special privileges. Instead, he lived a selfless, obedient life and then died a selfless, obedient death—and the worst kind of death at that—a crucifixion.

9-11 Because of that obedience, God lifted him high and honored him far beyond anyone or anything, ever, so that all created beings in heaven and on earth—even those long ago dead and buried—will bow in worship before this Jesus Christ, and call out in praise that he is the Master of all, to the glorious honor of God the Father.

-Phiippians 2:5-11 The Message

—Song 2: “Great Are You Lord” Key, Leader

LAMENT:  Band Member

…poetic lament with three movements; past, present, future grief.

46 How long, Lord? Will you hide yourself forever?

How long will your wrath burn like fire?

47 Remember how fleeting is my life.

For what futility you have created all humanity!

48 Who can live and not see death,

or who can escape the power of the grave?

-Psalm 89:46-48 NIV

—Song 3: “I Have to Believe” Key, Leader

ASSURANCE & GIVING: Liturgist

Hear this amazing assurance!

16-18 Christ brought us together through his death on the cross. The Cross got us to embrace, and that was the end of the hostility. Christ came and preached peace to you outsiders and peace to us insiders. He treated us as equals, and so made us equals. Through him we both share the same Spirit and have equal access to the Father.

19-22 That’s plain enough, isn’t it? You’re no longer wandering exiles. This kingdom of faith is now your home country. You’re no longer strangers or outsiders. You belong here, with as much right to the name Christian as anyone. God is building a home. He’s using us all—irrespective of how we got here—in what he is building.

-Ephesians 2:16-20 The Message

—Song 4: “Hallelujah What a Savior” Key, Leader

PASSING OF THE PEACE: Band Member

Jesus stepped into our chaos and sadness so that we could have peace and lasting joy. Let’s warmly welcome one another today as an expression of his grace and peace :

BENEDICTION: Liturgist

Sisters and brothers, embrace your limitations, grounded in reality, safe and secure in the hands of your limitless master: “Our Master, Jesus Christ, is on his way. He’ll show up right on time, his arrival guaranteed by the Blessed and Undisputed Ruler, High King, High God. He’s the only one death can’t touch, his light so bright no one can get close. He’s never been seen by human eyes—human eyes can’t take him in! Honor to him, and eternal rule!” […in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit! Peace be with you!]
