in Liturgy & Sermons

Welcome to Sojourn’s weekly worship music set list review & service recap. You’ll not only read a list of the songs we led, but also the readings and prayers from our liturgy. You can also watch the video stream of the whole service from our Facebook page or here below (you can also see a video of our sermon alone, from Vimeo).

Our liturgy is directed by Worship Director Justin Shaffer, in collaboration with our Creative Staff at Sojourn Church New Albany, our Liturgy writers, and worship staff at the other four Sojourn Collective churches in the Louisville area.

This Sunday Eric Fults preached Ecclesiastes 5:1-7 in our series Wise. To learn more about Sojourn Church, click here.

CALL TO WORSHIP:   Liturgist

Themes: God’s honesty and faithfulness

Good Morning! Welcome to Sojourn! Happy Independence Day!

8 Let the whole world fear the Lord,

and let everyone stand in awe of him.

9 For when he spoke, the world began!

It appeared at his command.

10 The Lord frustrates the plans of the nations

and thwarts all their schemes.

11 But the Lord’s plans stand firm forever;

his intentions can never be shaken.

12 What joy for the nation whose God is the Lord,

whose people he has chosen as his inheritance.

13 The Lord looks down from heaven

and sees the whole human race.

14 From his throne he observes

all who live on the earth.

15 He made their hearts,

so he understands everything they do.

16 The best-equipped army cannot save a king,

nor is great strength enough to save a warrior.

17 Don’t count on your warhorse to give you victory—

for all its strength, it cannot save you.

18 But the Lord watches over those who fear him,

those who rely on his unfailing love.

19 He rescues them from death

and keeps them alive in times of famine.

20 We put our hope in the Lord.

He is our help and our shield.

21 In him our hearts rejoice,

for we trust in his holy name.

22 Let your unfailing love surround us, Lord,

for our hope is in you alone.

-Psalm 33:8-22 NLT

—Song 2: “Yes and Amen” Key, Leader

LAMENT:  Band Member

Amos 5:21–24 (NLT): I hate all your show and pretense—

the hypocrisy of your religious festivals and solemn assemblies.

22 I will not accept your burnt offerings and grain offerings.

I won’t even notice all your choice peace offerings.

23 Away with your noisy hymns of praise!

I will not listen to the music of your harps.

24 Instead, I want to see a mighty flood of justice,

an endless river of righteous living

-We make a show of our faith, thinking we can fool each other, but even more so thinking we have God fooled. He sees right through our pretense, our playing Christianity (themes of dishonesty, hiding). Add a prayer of lament together:

—Song 3: Shine Into Our Night Key, Leader

ASSURANCE & GIVING: Liturgist

Themes: honesty and Transparency. We no longer have to hide (i.e. Genesis 3 in the bush). Now, in Christ, we can come BOLDLY before God as we are knowing we are covered in the blood of Christ.

Now that we know what we have—Jesus, this great High Priest with ready access to God—let’s not let it slip through our fingers. We don’t have a priest who is out of touch with our reality. He’s been through weakness and testing, experienced it all—all but the sin. So let’s walk right up to him and get what he is so ready to give. Take the mercy, accept the help.  (Hebrews 4:14-16 The message)

—Song 4: “Bow” Key, Leader

PASSING OF THE PEACE: Band Member

Let’s take a moment to welcome our neighbors in grace and peace

BENEDICTION: Liturgist

29 “Sovereign Lord, as you have promised, you may now dismiss your servant in peace. 30 For my eyes have seen your salvation, 31 which you have prepared in the sight of all nations: 32 a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and the glory of your people Israel.”  [Go in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit! Peace be with you!]                                                                                                                                -Luke 2:29-32
