Christian Liturgy 101: How We Worshiped Trinity Sunday 2021

by Bobby Gilles

in Liturgy & Sermons

Welcome to Sojourn’s weekly worship music set list review & service recap. You’ll not only read a list of the songs we led, but also the readings and prayers from our liturgy. You can also watch the video stream of the whole service from our Facebook page or here below (you can also see a video of our sermon alone, from Vimeo).

Our liturgy is directed by Worship Director Justin Shaffer, in collaboration with our Creative Staff at Sojourn Church New Albany, our Liturgy writers, and worship staff at the other four Sojourn Collective churches in the Louisville area.

This Sunday our liturgy included Ascension-themed readings from the previous Thursday’s Ascension Day. Then Pastor Jonah Sage preached Ecclesiastes 2:12-18 to begin our series Wise. To learn more about Sojourn Church, click here.

CALL TO WORSHIP:   Liturgist

Themes: Trinity Sunday

Bravo, God, bravo!

Gods and all angels shout, “Encore!”

In awe before the glory,

in awe before God’s visible power.

Stand at attention!

Dress your best to honor him!

God thunders across the waters,

Brilliant, his voice and his face, streaming brightness—

God, across the flood waters.

God’s thunder tympanic,

God’s thunder symphonic.

God’s thunder smashes cedars,

God topples the northern cedars.

The mountain ranges skip like spring colts,

The high ridges jump like wild kid goats.

God’s thunder spits fire.

God thunders, the wilderness quakes;

He makes the desert of Kadesh shake.

God’s thunder sets the oak trees dancing

A wild dance, whirling; the pelting rain strips their branches.

We fall to our knees—we call out, “Glory!”

Above the floodwaters is God’s throne

    from which his power flows,

from which he rules the world.

God makes his people strong.

God gives his people peace.                                                                        -Psalm 29 (The Message)

CONFESSION/LAMENT:  Band Member

Father, you demonstrated your great love for us while we were still sinners, yet our hearts continue to stray from you.

Lord, be merciful to us.

Jesus, you are the light that came to the world, yet we chose to love the darkness.

Lord, be merciful to us.

Holy Spirit, you have given us power to throw off our sinful natures, yet we often choose our former ways of life.

Lord, be merciful to us.

Lord, turn our hearts and eyes to you, and be merciful to us. Amen.

—Song 3: “Revelation Song” Jennie Lee Riddle

ASSURANCE & GIVING: Liturgist

Themes: Power of the Spirit

Therefore, dear brothers and sisters, you have no obligation to do what your sinful nature urges you to do. For if you live by its dictates, you will die. But if through the power of the Spirit you put to death the deeds of your sinful nature, you will live. For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God.

So you have not received a spirit that makes you fearful slaves. Instead, you received God’s Spirit when he adopted you as his own children. Now we call him, “Abba, Father.” For his Spirit joins with our spirit to affirm that we are God’s children. And since we are his children, we are his heirs. In fact, together with Christ we are heirs of God’s glory. But if we are to share his glory, we must also share his suffering.

-Romans 8:12-17

We have this assurance: the Holy Spirit has the power to put the deeds of our sinful nature to death, to lead us to life, and make us children of God. The bottom line is that we are HIS, and we are heirs with Christ.

—Song 4: “Blessed Assurance” Fannie Crosby
