Christian Liturgy 101: How One Church Worshiped 5-23-2021

by Bobby Gilles

in Liturgy & Sermons

Welcome to Sojourn’s weekly worship music set list review & service recap. You’ll not only read a list of the songs we led, but also the readings and prayers from our liturgy. You can also watch the video stream of the whole service from our Facebook page or here below (you can also see a video of our sermon alone, from Vimeo).

Our liturgy is directed by Worship Director Justin Shaffer, in collaboration with our Creative Staff at Sojourn Church New Albany, our Liturgy writers, and worship staff at the other four Sojourn Collective churches in the Louisville area.

This Sunday our liturgy included Ascension-themed readings from the previous Thursday’s Ascension Day. Then Pastor Stephen Pierce preached Ecclesiastes 1:1-18 to begin our series Wise. To learn more about Sojourn Church, click here.

CALL TO WORSHIP:   Liturgist

Themes: Pentecost Sunday – Wise Week One – “Praise God for the gift of life” –

30 When you send your Spirit,

they are created,

and you renew the face of the ground.

31 May the glory of the Lord endure forever;

may the Lord rejoice in his works—

32 he who looks at the earth, and it trembles,

who touches the mountains, and they smoke.

33 I will sing to the Lord all my life;

I will sing praise to my God as long as I live.

34 May my meditation be pleasing to him,

as I rejoice in the Lord.

-Psalm 104:30-34 NIV

—Song 1: “Psalm 34 (Taste and See)” Key, Leader

CONFESSION/LAMENT:  Band Member

Lament the difficulties of following Christ

“If the world hates you, remember that it hated me first. The world would love you as one of its own if you belonged to it, but you are no longer part of the world. I chose you to come out of the world, so it hates you. Do you remember what I told you? ‘A slave is not greater than the master.’ Since they persecuted me, naturally they will persecute you.

Jesus continues;

 “But I will send you the Advocate[b]—the Spirit of truth. He will come to you from the Father and will testify all about me. And you must also testify about me because you have been with me from the beginning of my ministry.

-John 15:18-20, 26-27

Prayer for the Spirit to work in us, that we may testify about Christ as well.

—Song 2: “Empty Me Out” Key, Leader

ASSURANCE & GIVING: Liturgist

For we know that all creation has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time. And we believers also groan, even though we have the Holy Spirit within us as a foretaste of future glory, for we long for our bodies to be released from sin and suffering. We, too, wait with eager hope for the day when God will give us our full rights as his adopted children,[j] including the new bodies he has promised us. We were given this hope when we were saved. (If we already have something, we don’t need to hope[k] for it. But if we look forward to something we don’t yet have, we must wait patiently and confidently.)

And the Holy Spirit helps us in our weakness. For example, we don’t know what God wants us to pray for. But the Holy Spirit prays for us with groanings that cannot be expressed in words. And the Father who knows all hearts knows what the Spirit is saying, for the Spirit pleads for us believers[l] in harmony with God’s own will.

-Romans 8:22-27

Pentecost Sunday reminds us that we don’t have to climb the mountain to reach God…we no longer have to strive to attain nearness to him. God came down to us. He makes his home inside of us, and fills us with his peace.

—Song 3: “Lead Us, Holy Spirit” Key, Leader

PEACE: Band Member

Since we’re one in Christ and one in the Holy Spirit, let’s take a few moments and greet each other with the peace that He has given us.

BENEDICTION: Liturgist

May the God who breathed life into creation be your delight.

May Christ Jesus fill you with wonder and thanksgiving at the gift of life,

and may the Holy Spirit, your advocate and supporter,

……..set your hearts ablaze with a passion for Jesus and his kingdom. Go in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Peace be with you!
