Christian Liturgy 101: How One Church Worshiped Mother’s Day 2021

by Bobby Gilles

in Liturgy & Sermons

Welcome to Sojourn’s weekly worship music set list review & service recap. You’ll not only read a list of the songs we led, but also the readings and prayers from our liturgy. You can also watch the video stream of the whole service from our Facebook page or here below (you can also see a video of our sermon alone, from Vimeo).

Our liturgy is directed by Worship Director Justin Shaffer, in collaboration with our Creative Staff at Sojourn Church New Albany, our Liturgy writers, and worship staff at the other four Sojourn Collective churches in the Louisville area.

This Sunday we celebrated Mother’s Day, and were excited to hold our first in-person Child Dedication service in nearly two years. Then Pastor Jonah preached Titus 3:1-11 in our series This Beautiful Church. To learn more about Sojourn Church, click here.

CALL TO WORSHIP:   Liturgist

Welcome to Sojourn and Happy Mother’s Day! We have so much to be thankful for today as God has called us to come to him by His Word and through his Spirit. Hear this call to worship from Psalm 98:

4 Shout to the Lord, all the earth;

break out in praise and sing for joy!

5 Sing your praise to the Lord with the harp,

with the harp and melodious song,

6 with trumpets and the sound of the ram’s horn.

Make a joyful symphony before the Lord, the King!

7 Let the sea and everything in it shout his praise!

Let the earth and all living things join in.

8 Let the rivers clap their hands in glee!

Let the hills sing out their songs of joy

9 before the Lord,

-Psalm 98:4-9 NLT

And let all God’s people worship him! Amen

—Song 1: “Fellowship So Deep” Key, Justin

—Song 2: “All I Have Is Yours” Key, Kara

ASSURANCE & GIVING: Justin

Hear the word of our Lord:

9 “I have loved you even as the Father has loved me. Remain in my love. 10 When you obey my commandments, you remain in my love, just as I obey my Father’s commandments and remain in his love. 11 I have told you these things so that you will be filled with my joy. Yes, your joy will overflow! 12 This is my commandment: Love each other in the same way I have loved you. 13 There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. 14 You are my friends if you do what I command. 15 I no longer call you slaves, because a master doesn’t confide in his slaves. Now you are my friends, since I have told you everything the Father told me. 16 You didn’t choose me. I chose you. I appointed you to go and produce lasting fruit, so that the Father will give you whatever you ask for, using my name. 17 This is my command: Love each other.                                                                                -John 15:9-17 NLT

—Song 3: “Lay it All Down” Key, Justin
