in Liturgy & Sermons

Welcome to Sojourn’s weekly worship music set list review & service recap. You’ll not only read a list of the songs we led, but also the readings and prayers from our liturgy. You can also watch the video stream of the whole service from our Facebook page or here below (you can also see a video of our sermon alone, from Vimeo).

Our liturgy is directed by Worship Director Justin Shaffer, in collaboration with our Creative Staff at Sojourn Church New Albany, our Liturgy writers, and worship staff at the other four Sojourn Collective churches in the Louisville area.

This Sunday Pastor Travis McGowen preached from Matthew 27:11-44  in our series on Matthew 23-28: Finished: The End Of The World And Our Way Of Living With It. To learn more about Sojourn Church, click here.

CALL TO WORSHIP:   Liturgist

Themes: This is what the Gospel does – beauty from ashes, death from life, profoundly unexpected

12 I praise you, O Lord;

teach me your decrees.

13 I have recited aloud

all the regulations you have given us.

14 I have rejoiced in your laws

as much as in riches.

15 I will study your commandments

and reflect on your ways.

16 I will delight in your decrees

and not forget your word.

-Psalm 119:12-16 NLT

—Song 1: “Build My Life” Key, Leader

—Song 2: “When the Savior Reached Down For Me” Key, Leader

CONFESSION & ASSURANCE: Liturgist

Themes: Humility like Jesus – that we would know when likewise to be silent and strong… follow the spirit

4-6 No one elects himself to this honored position. He’s called to it by God, as Aaron was. Neither did Christ presume to set himself up as high priest, but was set apart by the One who said to him, “You’re my Son; today I celebrate you!” In another place God declares, “You’re a priest forever in the royal order of Melchizedek.”

7-10 While he lived on earth, anticipating death, Jesus cried out in pain and wept in sorrow as he offered up priestly prayers to God. Because he honored God, God answered him. Though he was God’s Son, he learned trusting-obedience by what he suffered, just as we do. Then, having arrived at the full stature of his maturity and having been announced by God as high priest in the order of Melchizedek, he became the source of eternal salvation to all who believingly obey him.

ANNOUNCEMENTS: Reader

BENEDICTION: Liturgist

24-25 “Listen carefully: Unless a grain of wheat is buried in the ground, dead to the world, it is never any more than a grain of wheat. But if it is buried, it sprouts and reproduces itself many times over. In the same way, anyone who holds on to life just as it destroys that life. But if you let it go, reckless in your love, you’ll have it forever, real and eternal.

26 “If any of you wants to serve me, then follow me. Then you’ll be where I am, ready to serve at a moment’s notice. The Father will honor and reward anyone who serves me.

[So go church, and follow Jesus in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit! Peace be with you!]

-John 12:24-26 The Message
