in Liturgy & Sermons

Welcome to Sojourn’s weekly worship music set list review & service recap. You’ll not only read a list of the songs we led, but also the readings and prayers from our liturgy. You can also watch the video stream of the whole service from our Facebook page or here below (you can also see a video of our sermon alone, from Vimeo).

Our liturgy is directed by Worship Director Justin Shaffer, in collaboration with our Creative Staff at Sojourn Church New Albany, our Liturgy writers, and worship staff at the other four Sojourn Collective churches in the Louisville area.

This Sunday Pastor Jonah Sage preached from Matthew 19:1-15 in our series Family Values, from Matthew 19-22. To learn more about Sojourn Church, click here.

CALL TO WORSHIP:   Liturgist

Welcome to Sojourn! Every week we gather to remember – all of us are in need. So whether you’ve had a great week and are thrilled to be here or tuning in via facebook like, or things are tough and you’d rather be in bed, God invites us to come to him in our need. Let’s read God’s Word aloud together:

I will sing of the Lord’s unfailing love forever!

Young and old will hear of your faithfulness.

Your unfailing love will last forever.

Your faithfulness is as enduring as the heavens.

-Psalm 89:1-2 NLT

Let’s lift our voices in worship to our awesome God!

—Song 1: “How Great Thou Art” Key, Leader

CONFESSION/LAMENT:  Band Member

Our triune God has existed in perfect harmony for all of eternity… seems like sometimes we can’t make it a few moments without getting snide, prideful, or angry. Hear God’s word:

4 Don’t sin by letting anger control you.

Think about it overnight and remain silent.

Let’s practice this now and allow space to deal with our relational insecurities, failures, and limitations.

(Music plays under quiet prayer)

Hear how the Psalmist continues:

5 Offer sacrifices in the right spirit,

and trust the Lord.                                                                                                -Psalm 4:4-5 NLT

Without Jesus, this is impossible – but with Jesus, this IS our real hope.

—Song 2: “Give Reviving” Key, Leader

ASSURANCE & GIVING: Liturgist

Hear this assuring word:

For you know that God paid a ransom to save you from the empty life

you inherited from your ancestors.

And it was not paid with mere gold or silver, which lose their value.

It was the precious blood of Christ, the sinless, spotless Lamb of God.

-1 Peter 1:18-19 NLT

The ultimate demonstration of God’s love is found in the precious blood of Christ, the sinless, spotless lamb of God. This next song talks about the story of the cross, and a lyric in the song says that Jesus’ body was broken beautifully for us. Now, if we’re familiar with how Jesus died, It wasn’t a beautiful scene- it was bloody and gruesome and terrible how he died. But it was also beautiful because as the Bible says, at the cross, Jesus loved his own to the end, even when we didn’t deserve it or love him back. Once we comprehend that God’s love is not conditional or situational, but that in Christ it’s freely given and final, it changes everything for us.

Do you feel the truth of that today? If not, that’s okay. Ask the Lord that the truth of his love would be felt in your mind, your body, your spirit, your relationships, your life, and I believe he will be faithful to show you. Let’s sing.

—Song 3: “Your Love Changes Everything” Key, Leader

PASSING OF THE PEACE: Band Member

There is a sweetness to our gatherings regardless of our circumstances, whether here together or worshipping as you watch in your homes, because of the peace Christ has won for us- let’s greet one another in his peace now.

ANNOUNCEMENTS: Lector

BENEDICTION: Liturgist

May our dependably steady and warmly personal God develop maturity in you so that you get along with each other as well as Jesus gets along with us all. Then we’ll be a choir—not our voices only, but our very lives singing in harmony in a stunning anthem to the God and Father of our Master Jesus! [Go in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Peace be with you!]                                                                                                    -Romans 15:5-6
