Christian Liturgy 101: How One Church Worshiped August 9, 2020

by Bobby Gilles

in Liturgy & Sermons

Welcome to Sojourn’s weekly worship music set list review & service recap. You’ll not only read a list of the songs we led, but also the readings and prayers from our liturgy. You can also watch the video stream of the whole service from our Facebook page or here below (you can also see a video of our sermon alone, from Vimeo).

Our liturgy is directed by Worship Director Justin Shaffer, in collaboration with our Creative Staff at Sojourn Church New Albany, our Liturgy writers, and worship staff at the other four Sojourn Collective churches in the Louisville area. This week’s liturgy was composed by Rebekah Carroll.

This Sunday Pastor Jonah Sage preached from Genesis 1:26-27 in our series on racial justice and reconciliation, Family Matters. We begin with a short “countdown to the gathering” hosted by Deacon Kristen Gilles. To learn more about Sojourn Church, click here.

CALL TO WORSHIP:   Liturgist

Themes: Fellowship, the Word, joy, life, renewal

1 That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked at and our hands have touched—this we proclaim concerning the Word of life. 2 The life appeared; we have seen it and testify to it, and we proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and has appeared to us. 3 We proclaim to you what we have seen and heard, so that you also may have fellowship with us. And our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ. 4 We write this to make our joy complete.                                                                                      -1 John 1:1-4 NIV

—Song 1: “Revelation Song” Key, Meg

LAMENT:  Band Member

Pray this with me:

Lord, we lament the broken relationships all around us.

We see families divided everywhere, often because we choose our way of life over Your way.

Lord, have Your own way, and help us to love our spouses, children and families.

We haven’t loved our neighbors, as You have commanded us.

Instead, we often hurt each other with our words and actions.

Lord, have Your own way, and help us to love our neighbors as ourselves.

Even as the body of Christ, we choose our own way, arguing and saying hurtful things

instead of showing each other brotherly and sisterly love.

Lord, have Your own way, and unite us as Your children.

We’ve turned a blind eye to the widows, the poor and the needy, instead of stepping in to help.

Lord, have Your own way, and transform our hearts to show compassion to the world.

Lord, forgive us, and have Your own way.

Amen.

Let’s make this next song our prayer, that God would have his way in our lives so that the world will see, know and experience the love of Christ our Lord.

—Song 2: “Have Thine Own Way” Key, Meg

ASSURANCE & GIVING: Liturgist

Hear this incredible truth, church:

3 We can rejoice, too, when we run into problems and trials, for we know that they help us develop endurance. 4 And endurance develops strength of character, and character strengthens our confident hope of salvation. 5 And this hope will not lead to disappointment. For we know how dearly God loves us, because he has given us the Holy Spirit to fill our hearts with his love.

6 When we were utterly helpless, Christ came at just the right time and died for us sinners

-Romans 5:3-6 NLT

—Song 3: “Mighty to Save” Key, Ryan – Funky soulful up-tempo arrangement

PASSING OF THE PEACE: Band Member

[Spoken Text]

9 Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. 10 Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves. 11 Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. 12 Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. 13 Share with the Lord’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality.                                       -Romans 12:9-13 NIV
