Christian Liturgy 101: How One Church Worshiped March 15, 2020

by Bobby Gilles

in Liturgy & Sermons

Welcome to Sojourn’s weekly worship music set list review & service recap. You’ll not only read a list of the songs we led, but also the readings and prayers from our liturgy. You can also watch the video stream of the whole service from our Facebook page, or here below (you’ll also see a higher resolution video of the sermon alone).

Our liturgy is written by Worship Director Justin Shaffer, in collaboration with our Creative Team at Sojourn Church New Albany and worship staff at the other four Sojourn Collective churches in the Louisville area.

This Sunday Pastor Jonah Sage preached from Matthew 15:1-9 in our series Come Home: Full Life In A Whole Church. To learn more about Sojourn Church, click here. In the midst of the Coronavirus/COVID-19 pandemic, we urged people to stay home and sing, pray, recite scripture, give, and listen to the sermon via our live stream on Facebook.

—Prelude: “Come And Sing” Jeremy

CALL TO WORSHIP:

Themes: We begin as we do every Sunday, standing on the word of God. Hear his word:

Every word you give me is a miracle word—

how could I help but obey?

Break open your words, let the light shine out,

let ordinary people see the meaning.

-Psalm 119:129-130 The Message

Let’s respond with singing!

—Song 2: “Doxology” Jeremy

CONFESSION/LAMENT:

[Spoken Text]

For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.

-Hebrews 4:12 NIV

How do we respond? … again, we may turn to his word for guidance:

8 But he’s already made it plain how to live, what to do,

what God is looking for in men and women.

It’s quite simple: Do what is fair and just to your neighbor,

be compassionate and loyal in your love,

And don’t take yourself too seriously—

take God seriously.

-Micah 6:8 The Message

[Spoken Text]

—Song 3: “Dear Refuge Of My Weary Soul” Jeremy

ASSURANCE & GIVING: Liturgist

Hear the word of the Lord:

8 The grass withers and the flowers fade,

but the word of our God stands forever.”

9 O Zion, messenger of good news,

shout from the mountaintops!

Shout it louder, O Jerusalem.

Shout, and do not be afraid.

Tell the towns of Judah,

“Your God is coming!”

10 Yes, the Sovereign Lord is coming in power.

He will rule with a powerful arm.

See, he brings his reward with him as he comes.

11 He will feed his flock like a shepherd.

He will carry the lambs in his arms,

holding them close to his heart.

He will gently lead the mother sheep with their young.                                                 -Isaiah 40:8-11 NLT

What’s our response to God’s unchanging word? To shout it… shout it louder… don’t be afraid… remember God is coming… he’s coming in power… he’ll bring a reward… he will feed (provide) for us… carry us… hold us close to his heart… gently lead us.

If service is online only – you may give on the app, text message, or by snail mail — instructions are on the screen.

—Song 4: “Hallelujah What a Savior” Jeremy

PASSING OF THE PEACE:

Because of what our savior has done for us, we have peace with God and one another…

Why not commit to call a loved one later today, or mail a card. You can even say “Hello” to your church family right now in the comment section of our Facebook feed.

ANNOUNCEMENTS: Reader

Thank you for joining us. Pastor Jonah taught that the church is a people built on the word of God.

If you have a prayer request just tap the “Member Services” button on our app. If you want to get connected, text “Welcome” to the number you see on your screen. You can also message us on our Facebook page.

Next week we’ll see how Jesus invites us to be renewed internally, which produces lives of practical holiness. Join us and bring a friend.

—Song 6: “Great Is Thy Faithfulness” Kristen

BENEDICTION: Liturgist

So keep a firm grip on the faith. The suffering won’t last forever. It won’t be long before this generous God who has great plans for us in Christ—eternal and glorious plans they are!—will have you put together and on your feet for good. He gets the last word; yes, he does. [Go in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Peace be with you!]
