by Bobby Gilles

in Liturgy & Sermons

Welcome to Sojourn’s weekly worship music set list review & service recap. You’ll not only read a list of the songs we led, but also the readings and prayers from our liturgy. You can also watch the video stream of the whole service from our Facebook page, or here below (you’ll also see a higher resolution video of the sermon alone).

Our liturgy is written by Worship Director Justin Shaffer, in collaboration with our Creative Team at Sojourn Church New Albany and worship staff at the other four Sojourn Collective churches in the Louisville area.

This Sunday Pastor Jonah Sage preached the fourth sermon in our Advent series, The Songs Of Jesus. To learn more about Sojourn Church, click here.

CALL TO WORSHIP:  Justin

Themes: Love of God, Calming Fears,

Good morning! Welcome to Sojourn! Lighting a candle is a simple act. It’s a *little out of the ordinary in our time because candlelight is not, strictly speaking, necessary… it’s easy to take for granted that when this tradition began candlelight was utterly ordinary. It is also a profound act – a testimony to the power of light over darkness. The fourth candle of Advent is called the Love candle; as we anticipate Christmas, let us remember our loving savior, how he came as a baby boy that the world… through him… might be saved, as we sing our longings for him to fulfill his promise to return in glory.

Let’s sing!

—Song 2: “O Come, O Come, Emmanuel” Em, Justin leads

CONFESSION:  Justin

Themes: Mission, perseverance, God at work within us, the strength of God’s people, Holy Spirit

O God, would you become real in our lives,

That we may be awakened to the needs of the world.

May the suffering world find love in our hearts, hope in our lips, and freedom in our feet.

Help us to walk in justice, extravagant mercy, and be humble before You.

Jesus, you are light to the dark world, truth to illusion, hope in the midst of despair.

May Your kingdom come and Your will be done on Earth as it is in heaven. Amen.

adapted by Danté Stewart (Prophesy Hope!) from Micah 6:8

“This is what it means to be the people of God during Advent: No matter what the world throws at us, we are a people on a mission.”

—Song 3: “Light of the World” E, Meg leads

ASSURANCE/GIVING: Jonah

Themes: Antidote to fear

Hear this profound assurance:

12 Jesus spoke to the people once more and said, “I am the light of the world. If you follow me, you won’t have to walk in darkness, because you will have the light that leads to life.” -John 8:12 NLT

Giving…

—Song 4: “What Child is This” Fm, Ryan leads

PASSING OF THE PEACE: Meg

Hear our savior’s teaching:

36 “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?”

37 Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’     -Matthew 22:36-39 NIV

For the Lord your God is living among you.
