Christian Liturgy 101: How One Church Worshiped, Christ The King Sunday 2019

by Kristen Gilles

in Liturgy & Sermons

Welcome to Sojourn’s weekly worship music set list review & service recap. You’ll not only read a list of the songs we led, but also the readings and prayers from our liturgy. You can also watch the video stream of the whole service from our Facebook page, or here below (you’ll also see a higher resolution video of the sermon alone).

Our liturgy is written by Worship Director Justin Shaffer, in collaboration with our Creative Team at Sojourn Church New Albany and worship staff at the other four Sojourn Collective churches in the Louisville area.

This Sunday, we celebrated Christ The King Sunday. Pastor Bobby Gilles preached from Matthew 12:38-42, the finale in our series Respond: Following the Lord of Life. To learn more about Sojourn Church, click here.

CALL TO WORSHIP

Welcome…

21 I will dress him in your royal robes and will give him your title and your authority. And he will be a father to the people of Jerusalem and Judah. 22 I will give him the key to the house of David—the highest position in the royal court. When he opens doors, no one will be able to close them; when he closes doors, no one will be able to open them. 23 He will bring honor to his family name, for I will drive him firmly in place like a nail in the wall. 24 They will give him great responsibility, and he will bring honor to even the lowliest members of his family.”

-Isaiah 22:21-24 NLT

CONFESSION

Hear the apostle Paul…

22 For we know that all creation has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time. 23 And we believers also groan, even though we have the Holy Spirit within us as a foretaste of future glory, for we long for our bodies to be released from sin and suffering.

-Romans 22:22-23 NLT

Let’s take a moment and pray… leave this verse on the screen…

ASSURANCE & GIVING

Spoken

We, too, wait with eager hope for the day when God will give us our full rights as his adopted children,[j] including the new bodies he has promised us. 24 We were given this hope when we were saved. (If we already have something, we don’t need to hope[k] for it. 25 But if we look forward to something we don’t yet have, we must wait patiently and confidently.)

26 And the Holy Spirit helps us in our weakness. For example, we don’t know what God wants us to pray for. But the Holy Spirit prays for us with groanings that cannot be expressed in words.          -Romans 8:23b-26 NLT

PASSING OF THE PEACE

Hear the word of the Lord:

7 May there be peace within your walls

and security within your citadels.”

8 For the sake of my family and friends,

I will say, “Peace be within you.”                                                                   -Psalm 122:7-8 NIV

Let’s greet each other 🙂
