Christian Liturgy 101 – How One Church Worshiped, July 14, 2019

by Kristen Gilles

in Liturgy & Sermons

Welcome to Sojourn’s weekly worship music set list review & service recap. You’ll not only read a list of the songs we led, but also the readings and prayers from our liturgy. You can also watch the video stream of the whole service from our Facebook page, or here below (you’ll also see a video of the sermon alone). We had trouble with the audio during the sermon on the Facebook feed, but the sermon-only video works fine.

Our liturgy is written by Worship Director Justin Shaffer, in collaboration with our Creative Team at Sojourn Church New Albany and worship staff at the other four Sojourn Collective churches in the Louisville area.

This Sunday, following the scripture reading by Deacon Lindsey Blair, Pastor Bobby Gilles preached from Daniel 2 in our new series from the book of Daniel, Stand: Staying Strong In A World Of Chaos. To learn more about Sojourn Church, click here.

I Heard About a Stone (traditional)

CALL TO WORSHIP

Spoken (simi-dramatic reading with Ryan playing synth underneath)

1 I will sing of the Lord’s great love forever;

with my mouth I will make your faithfulness known

through all generations.

2 I will declare that your love stands firm forever,

that you have established your faithfulness in heaven itself.

5 The heavens praise your wonders, Lord,

your faithfulness too, in the assembly of the holy ones.

6 For who in the skies above can compare with the Lord?

Who is like the Lord among the heavenly beings?

7 In the council of the holy ones God is greatly feared;

he is more awesome than all who surround him.

8 Who is like you, Lord God Almighty?

You, Lord, are mighty, and your faithfulness surrounds you.

9 You rule over the surging sea;

when its waves mount up, you still them.

11 The heavens are yours, and yours also the earth;

you founded the world and all that is in it.

12 You created the north and the south;

Tabor and Hermon sing for joy at your name.

13 Your arm is endowed with power;

your hand is strong, your right hand exalted.

14 Righteousness and justice are the foundation of your throne;

love and faithfulness go before you.

18 Indeed, our shield belongs to the Lord,

our king to the Holy One of Israel.                                                                -Psalm 89:1-18 NIV

LAMENT

(Heads bowed, eyes closed) …Lament injustice, particularly at the hands of oppressive regimes and political schemes, being sensitive not to add to the offense of the gospel by getting too political or partisan… remember Jesus’ work to dethrone earthly kings and look forward to his return…

Rock of Ages written by Augustus M. Toplady and Thomas Hastings.

ASSURANCE & GIVING

We’ve heard the historic confession “Jesus is Lord” many times over the last few weeks as several people have gone public with their faith in baptism…

“The word is near you; it is in your mouth and in your heart,” that is, the message concerning faith that we proclaim: 9 If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved. 11 As Scripture says, “Anyone who believes in him will never be put to shame.” 12 For there is no difference between Jew and Gentile—the same Lord is Lord of all and richly blesses all who call on him, 13 for, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”

-Romans 10:8b-13 NIV

Knowing that God holds tomorrow is a game-changer. Among other things, it should affect how we view our finances… how we scheme. On one hand, as image bearers of the living God we imitate him… so we also plan, intentionally scheming to do good with what he has entrusted into our care. On the other hand, we know that God ultimately holds these things and is working for his good purposes and our gain, so we don’t have to worry any more. As the giving baskets are passed around, let’s take a collective deep breath together… perhaps you’re worried about your finances… where you’re going to go to college, what you’re going to do when you graduate, how you’re going to make the next mortgage payment or how you’re ever going to keep up with the Jones’s and catch up on your retirement savings. Pray over these things and know that God holds all these and more… God holds your past, your present, and your future.

PASSING OF THE PEACE

Hallelujah! Thank God for his power to heal, restore, and forgive! Let’s greet each other today as one church… not divided any more, but united in Christ the King 🙂

BENEDICTION

He who is the blessed and only Sovereign, the King of kings and Lord of lords, who alone has immortality, who dwells in unapproachable light, whom no one has ever seen or can see. To him be honor and eternal dominion. [Go in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Peace be with you!]
