in Liturgy & Sermons

Welcome to Sojourn’s weekly worship music set list review & service recap. You’ll not only read a list of the songs we led, but also the readings and prayers from our liturgy. You can also watch the video stream of the whole service from our Facebook page, or here below (you’ll also see a video of the sermon alone).

Our liturgy was written by deacon and staff Administrator Kristen Gilles, in collaboration with our Creative Team at Sojourn Church New Albany.

This Sunday Pastor Jonah Sage preached from Esther 4, in our series on Esther – Steady: Standing Strong In A World Of Chaos. Liturgical choices also reflected the first Sunday of Ordinary Time in the Christian liturgical calendar.  To learn more about Sojourn Church, click here.

CALL TO WORSHIP (Kristen)

Good morning and welcome to Sojourn! Over the last few months we’ve journeyed through Lent, Easter, and Pentecost; and now we enter a season of the church calendar called Ordinary Time, which reflects on the reality that ordinary Christianity is Spirit-filled Christianity. In essence, this liturgical season heralds the fact that Christian ministry is the vocation of every believer, wherever God has called you to live and move and have your being. In His thoughtfulness and goodness God has chosen us to co-labor with Him in building His kingdom. Let’s read His Word aloud together:

On Screen: “You whom I took from the ends of the earth, and called from its farthest corners, saying to you, “You are My servant, I have chosen you and not cast you off”; do not fear, for I am with you, do not be afraid, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my victorious right hand.” (Isaiah 41:9-10 NRSV)

Let’s respond in faith as we continue to sing and magnify the strength and glorious deeds of our great God!

Song – Great Are You Lord (Steve)

CONFESSION (Steve and Mindy)

Brothers and sisters, since we have Jesus as our great High Priest who intercedes for us before our Father in heaven, let us approach the throne of grace with fullest confidence, that we may receive mercy for our failures and grace to help in the hour of need. In the strength of this assurance, let us confess our sins to God. Pray this aloud:

On Screen:  Merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart and mind and strength. We have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. In your mercy, forgive what we have been, help us amend what we are, and direct what we shall be, so that we may delight in Your will and walk in Your ways, to the glory of Your holy name. Through Christ Jesus, our Lord. Amen.

Let’s continue to sing our prayers before God’s throne of grace.

Song – Come Thou Fount (Mindy)

ASSURANCE & GIVING (Kristen)

Hear the Word of the Lord and read the underlined portions aloud with me:

On Screen: “Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before Him He endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider Him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.” (Hebrews 12:1-3, NIV)

As we enter our time of Giving, and in light of all God has done for us, receive this encouragement from His Word:

On Screen: “So here’s what I want you to do, God helping you: Take your everyday, ordinary life—your sleeping, eating, going-to-work, and walking-around life—and place it before God as an offering. Embracing what God does for you is the best thing you can do for Him.” (Romans 12:1, The Message)

God has the best heart for us. His way is the best way for us. His Word spoken over our lives is the best and final Word.  Let us respond to His generous kindness by giving generously of all the wealth God has given to us.

Song – Our Great God (Kristen)

PASSING OF THE PEACE (Steve)

On Screen: “Since we are justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have obtained access to this grace in which we stand; and we boast in our hope of sharing the glory of God.” (Romans 5:1-2, NRSV)

As members of God’s family, justified by faith and granted peace with God, let’s share the peace of Christ as we greet each other now.

BENEDICTION (Steve)

“So, my dear brothers and sisters, be steadfast and immovable. Always work enthusiastically for the Lord, for you know that nothing you do for the Lord is ever useless.” (I Corinthians 15:58, NLT)

Go now in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Peace be with you.
