Welcome to Sojourn’s weekly worship music set list review & service recap for this second Sunday of Advent. You’ll not only read a list of the songs we led, but also the readings and prayers from our liturgy. You can also watch the video stream of the whole service from our Facebook page, or here below.

Our liturgy is written by worship director Justin Shaffer in collaboration with worship directors at other Sojourn churches.

This Sunday Pastor Jonah Sage preached from Matthew 6:19-34 in our series from the Sermon on the Mount in Matthew 5-7, The Good Life: Living The More You Were Made ForTo learn more about Sojourn Church, click here.

CALL TO WORSHIP

Good morning and welcome to Sojourn… We begin our service with a call to worship, because we recognize that God is the one who called us to himself. He instigated this relationship. Jesus walked the Earth, befriending outsiders, outcasts, misfits and failures. He ate and drank with prostitutes, tax collectors and sinners. Hear the words of Jesus

“For the Son of man came to seek and to save the lost.” (Luke 19:10)

We are not here because we were good enough to meet God. We bring nothing to the table. We were the outsiders, the outcasts, the misfits and the failures, and yet he called us to be his. As we gather together today, remember that we are only here because God loved us, wanted us, and called us to himself. Let’s respond to our wonderful Father and rejoice alongside believers throughout the world of all tribes and tongues and nations!

LAMENT

Even for those who have experience the transformation and peace of Christ, there are times of abundance and times of scarcity. We know that in this world, we will have trouble. So let’s pray this prayer of Lament together and allow ourselves to be honest about this reality:

Lord, you have made a world that is full of beauty and wonder.

You have allowed us to know you,

To know your love and goodness,

And for that, we worship you.

And yet we know that the world is not

The way it was meant to be.

Sin, death, and suffering abound, and for them we cry,

Have mercy, Oh God.

For those who suffer disease of the body and mind,

Have mercy, Oh God.

For those who suffer injustice and oppression,

Have mercy, Oh God.

For those who have lost loved ones,

or whose family has been torn apart by sin,

Have mercy, Oh God.

May we know your presence,

Even when storms rage,

When sorrows pile up around us.

God our Maker, Christ our Healer, Spirit our Comforter,

Be near to us in this broken world.

Amen.

Now Why This Fear  –  Justin

ASSURANCE & GIVING

Hear this glorious assurance:

8 The Lord is compassionate and gracious,

slow to anger, abounding in love.

9 He will not always accuse,

nor will he harbor his anger forever;

10 he does not treat us as our sins deserve

or repay us according to our iniquities.

11 For as high as the heavens are above the earth,

so great is his love for those who fear him;

12 as far as the east is from the west,

so far has he removed our transgressions from us.

13 As a father has compassion on his children,

so the Lord has compassion on those who fear him;

-Psalm 103:8-13 NIV

Hallelujah! As we prepare our tithes and offerings, lets us pray:

Father God, receive our offering.

May our gifts be used for Your glory,

May our tithes be used to grow to Your church,

May we participate in fulfilling Your Great Commission. Amen.

Let’s continue to worship as the giving baskets are passed around 🙂
