Sojourn Church Liturgy – Palm Sunday 2018 – Parable of the Sheep and Goats

by Bobby Gilles

in Liturgy & Sermons

Welcome to Sojourn’s weekly worship music set list review & service recap. You’ll not only read a list of the songs we led, but also the readings and prayers from our liturgy. And if you’d like to see how we incorporate liturgical art and lead the responsive readings, watch the embedded video of our entire service, or check it out on the Sojourn New Albany Facebook page. Our liturgy is written by worship director Justin Shaffer in collaboration with worship directors at other Sojourn churches.

This Sunday Pastor Jonah Sage preached a sermon on the parable of the sheep and the goats, the final sermon of our Parables of Jesus series. It was also Palm Sunday, the annual service for commemorating Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem at the start of Holy Week. Our SojournKids joined us in the auditorium, waving palm branches as they marched around the room while we sang “Hosannah In The Highest.” Learn more about Sojourn Community Church here.

CALL TO WORSHIP

Good morning and welcome to our Sunday gathering at sojourn! I’m _____ one of the _____. Today is Palm Sunday – a celebration that looks back to Jesus’ triumphant entry into the city of Jerusalem – a day when he was honored as a King who’d come to conquer the enemies of God. The people lined roads, waving palms branches and hailing him as Lord. Today we join those shouts of praise to Christ; the one who unites us, saves us and rules over our lives.

Come, everyone! Clap your hands! Shout to God with joyful praise!

For the Lord Most High is awesome. He is the great King of all the earth.

He subdues the nations before us, putting our enemies beneath our feet.

Sing praises to God, sing praises to our King!

God reigns above the nations, sitting on his holy throne.

The rulers of the world have gathered together with the people of the God of Abraham.

For all the kings of the earth belong to God. He is highly honored everywhere.

– Psalm 47

Let’s lift our voices to praise our King!

Hosanna In The Highest (Palm Sunday Version) written by Jeremy Quillo.

CONFESSION

Let’s pray together:

Jesus, our Lord, we shout hosannas and worship you.

With eager hands, we place our palms of praise on the path before you.

Yet, Lord, we confess that our mouths often deny or defy you.

And we confess that the hands that seek to serve you often become clenched fists.

Just as the people of Jerusalem did long ago  – We sing “Hosanna,” but cry “Crucify.”

We want to rule our own lives rather than bow before you.

Jesus, you came in weakness to give us strength and a place in your kingdom.

Forgive us, lift us up and help us to follow you.

Jesus, You are Lord over our lives. Amen. – adapted from The Worship Sourcebook

Be Thou My Vision (traditional Irish hymn)

ASSURANCE/GIVING

Hear this assurance of our reality in Christ:

14 For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God. 15 The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship. And by him we cry, “Abba, Father.” 16 The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children.                                        -Romans 8:14-16 NIV

…and as God’s children we follow in our Father’s generous footsteps, bringing life where we go. One of the core aspects of being a Christians is being a generative people* – seeking to recreate God’s generosity in all aspects of life. As the giving baskets are passed around, let’s pray to that end. 🙂

There is a Fountain Filled With Blood written by William Cowper.

PASSING OF THE PEACE

God has reconciled his children to Himself through Christ, so now in Christ we are reconciled to each other. Let’s enjoy greeting each other with that peace for the next few moments! 🙂

BENEDICTION

Receive this most famous benediction, known throughout the world as the Great Commission… hear the words of Jesus:

“All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”                                                                        -Matthew 28:18b-20 NIV
