in Liturgy & Sermons

Welcome to Sojourn’s weekly worship music set list review & service recap. You’ll not only read a list of the songs we led, but also the readings and prayers from our liturgy. And if you’d like to see how we incorporate liturgical art and lead the responsive readings, watch the embedded video of our entire service, or check it out on the Sojourn New Albany Facebook page. Our liturgy is written by worship director Justin Shaffer in collaboration with worship directors at other Sojourn churches.

This Sunday Pastor Jonah Sage preached from 2 Samuel 24 (David and the census) in our Life Of David series. Learn more about Sojourn Community Church here.

CALL TO WORSHIP

Welcome to Sojourn! I’m Justin… Welcome guests and pardon our mess… “someone with an ‘I Can Help You’ lanyard” I’m so glad you’ve joined us for worship today. We gather together every week to be reminded that our God is Good, that He is for us, and that He is present with us in every moment our lives. Read the underlined portions on the screen with me as we prepare our hearts to worship the Lord.

Let us worship God, our light and our salvation!

The Lord is the stronghold of our lives.

We have come to sing with joy to the Lord!

We worship You, our God, in spirit and in truth.

O Lord, teach us Your ways.

Make our paths straight and our hearts pure,

In this time of worship and in all of our lives.

—based on Psalm 27; John 4:23, adapted from The Worship Sourcebook

Let’s continue to sing.

Song: At Your Name – How Great Thou Art (Tag)

CONFESSION

1 Corinthians 4:7 asks rhetorically:

What do you have that you did not receive? If then you received it, why do you boast as if you did not receive it?

-1 Corinthians 4:7b ESV

Jesus taught us to confess and repent as often as we pray, let’s pray together:

O Lord our God, you have searched us and known us.

You know how quickly our thoughts rise to praise ourselves

because we are accomplished or put together or smart,

boasting of your gifts as if they were our accomplishments.

You know how slowly our thoughts sink to accuse ourselves,

quickly boasting, slow to confessing.

O God, forgive, correct, and heal us through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

Song Nothing Without You

ASSURANCE/GIVING

Spoken… trust in the Lord with all your heart but we have EVERYTHING, all we need in Jesus.

Trust in the Lord with all your heart

and lean not on your own understanding;

in all your ways submit to him,

and he will make your paths straight.[a]                                                     -Proverbs 3:5-6 NIV

We obey God’s commands because he is Lord of all the universe and he loves us… this won’t always make sense…

…let’s pray aloud together as we prepare our tithes and offerings.

God, in the presence of each other

We bring you this offering, as we praise you

For supplying all we need in Christ.

Amen! The giving baskets will be passed around as we sing.

Song Behold the Christ

PEACE

1 John 3… the presence of Christ, ‘beholding him,’ is what will ultimately heal our relationships…

Though life is replete with broken relationships and wounded friendships, Jesus Christ is our prince of peace. When Christ rules in our hearts and minds we can have peace with one another and grow in community. Broken relationships can be healed and restored. Let’s greet one another with the peace of Christ.
