by Bobby Gilles

in Liturgy & Sermons

Welcome to Sojourn’s weekly worship music set list review & service recap. You’ll not only read a list of the songs we led, but also the readings and prayers from our liturgy. And if you’d like to see how we incorporate liturgical art and lead the responsive readings, watch the embedded video of our entire service, or check it out on the Sojourn New Albany Facebook page. Our liturgy is written by worship director Justin Shaffer in collaboration with worship directors at other Sojourn churches. This Sunday Pastor Jonah Sage preached from Mark 1 in the first of our three-part annual “State Of The Communion series (a vision casting series for the coming year).  Learn more about Sojourn Community Church here.

CALL TO WORSHIP

Welcome! God created us from the beginning as relational beings… to fellowship… to commune with Him and each other… to worship him in all of life. The Bible teaches that God is with us in Jesus, and also that he is with us in a special way when we gather. In a sense, God is inviting us to come SEE him, to commune with him, and we are inviting each other with a gentle nudge to come to the party… so come, experience a glimpse of the most high God! THIS is his word:

Praise the Lord.

Praise the Lord, you his servants;

praise the name of the Lord.

Let the name of the Lord be praised,

   both now and forevermore.

From the rising of the sun to the place where it sets,

the name of the Lord is to be praised.

The Lord is exalted over all the nations,

   his glory above the heavens.

Who is like the Lord our God,

the One who sits enthroned on high, -Psalm 133:1-5 (NIV)

Let’s sing! 🙂

Nothing But the Blood written by Robert Lowry.

CONFESSION

The psalmist models a humble and transparent faith as he confesses his sin before the Lord. The Lord invites us to do the same and find healing in him. Let’s read and confess together:

Search me, O God, and know my heart;

Test me and know my thoughts.

See if there is any wicked way in me,

And lead me in the way everlasting.

-Psalm 139:23-24 NRSV

Let’s open our hearts before the Lord, inviting him to teach us and to lead us in the way everlasting. Let’s sing.

God Alone written by Dave Moisan, Brooks Ritter.

ASSURANCE/GIVING

God has promised to never leave us or forsake us. God does not abandon His Creation. Hear these words from the Psalms.

Where can I go from your spirit? Or where can I flee from your presence?

If I ascend to heaven, you are there; if I make my bed in Sheol, you are there.

If I take the wings of the morning and settle at the farthest limits of the sea,

even there your hand shall lead me, and your right hand shall hold me fast.

If I say, “Surely the darkness shall cover me, and the light around me become night,”

even the darkness is not dark to you; the night is as bright as the day, for darkness is as light to you. (Psalm 139:7-12)

God has delivered us from Satan, and from the penalty of our own sin. No one and nothing else could do this.

As we prepare our tithes and offerings, let’s pray this together:

Lord, accept this offering as an act of worship

and a sign that nothing takes your place in our heart –

not even money.

If you’re a visitor this morning, don’t feel obligated to give. This service is our gift to you, from coffee to childcare, because the people around you are some of the most generous people you’ll ever meet.

As the giving baskets are passed around let’s sing!

New Again written by Brooks Ritter and Mike Cosper.

PASSING OF THE PEACE

God’s love has brought us peace with Him and with one another. Let us celebrate that love by greeting one another with the peace of Christ.

Come To The Feast written by Jeff Lawson.

Raise Our Song (Power In Your Name) written by Bobby Gilles, Jonatan Barahona, Brooks Ritter.

BENEDICTION

May the God of endurance and encouragement grant you to live in such harmony with one another, in accord with Christ Jesus, that together you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. Go in the name of the Father Son and the Holy Spirit, peace be with you.

 Rom. 15:5-6
