Sojourn Church Liturgy – April 15, 2018 – Truth As A Core Value

by Bobby Gilles

in Liturgy & Sermons

Welcome to Sojourn’s weekly worship music set list review & service recap. You’ll not only read a list of the songs we led, but also the readings and prayers from our liturgy. And if you’d like to see how we incorporate liturgical art and lead the responsive readings, watch the embedded video of our entire service, or check it out on the Sojourn New Albany Facebook page. Our liturgy is written by worship director Justin Shaffer in collaboration with worship directors at other Sojourn churches.

This Sunday we began a new series, Our Sojourn, where we explore God’s mission and vision for Sojourn Community Church. Pastor Jonah Sage preached about our mission to reach people with the gospel, build them up as God’s church, and send them to all the world. His text was Matthew 28:16-20.  Learn more about Sojourn Community Church here.

CALL TO WORSHIP

Good morning… welcome to sojourn! Whenever we gather, we do so around Jesus, because of Jesus – the true vine. Hear this prophecy of the rock upon which we stand – Jesus our Lord and King:

11 Out of the stump of David’s family will grow a shoot—
yes, a new Branch bearing fruit from the old root.
2 And the Spirit of the Lord will rest on him—
the Spirit of wisdom and understanding,
the Spirit of counsel and might,
the Spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord.
3 He will delight in obeying the Lord.
He will not judge by appearance
nor make a decision based on hearsay.
4 He will give justice to the poor
and make fair decisions for the exploited.
The earth will shake at the force of his word,
and one breath from his mouth will destroy the wicked.
5 He will wear righteousness like a belt
and truth like an undergarment.                                                                              -Isaiah 11:1-5

Song Bless the Lord (Son of Man) written by Tye Tribbett.

CONFESSION/LAMENT

Let us pray this Psalm together:

4 Show me your ways, Lord,

teach me your paths.

5 Guide me in your truth and teach me,

for you are God my Savior,

and my hope is in you all day long.

6 Remember, Lord, your great mercy and love,

for they are from of old.

7 Do not remember the sins of my youth

and my rebellious ways;

according to your love remember me,

for you, Lord, are good.                                                                                           -Psalm 25:4-7

(Themes: Demands change)  -Being honest not just true information, but honest about ourselves… integrity… “Lord we confess that we wear many faces… one way around some people and another way around others… afraid to be known

Song Oh Help My Unbelief written by Isaac Watts and Justin Smith.

ASSURANCE/GIVING

Hear this truth:

6 Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. 7 If you really know me, you will know[b] my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him.”                                                                       -John 14:6-7 NIV

What a strong assurance that Jesus himself asserted that disciples do indeed know God through him!

17 Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows. 18 He chose to give us birth through the word of truth, that we might be a kind of firstfruits of all he created                       -James 1:17-19

Song Be Thou My Vision traditional Irish hymn.

PASSING OF THE PEACE

Spoken

I am not writing you a new command but one we have had from the beginning. I ask that we love one another. 6 And this is love: that we walk in obedience to his commands. As you have heard from the beginning, his command is that you walk in love.                                   -2 John 5b-6

APOSTLES CREED

I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth;

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Song All Creatures of our God and King written by Francis of Assisi.
