in Liturgy & Sermons

Welcome to Sojourn’s weekly worship music set list review & service recap. You’ll not only read a list of the songs we led, but also the readings and prayers from our liturgy. And if you’d like to see how we incorporate liturgical art and lead the responsive readings, watch the embedded video of our entire service, or check it out on the Sojourn New Albany Facebook page. Our liturgy is written by worship director Justin Shaffer in collaboration with worship directors at other Sojourn churches. This Sunday Pastor Travis McGowan preached from 1 Samuel in the first sermon of our new Life Of David series.  Learn more about Sojourn Community Church here.

CALL TO WORSHIP

Welcome to Sojourn! Each week we celebrate the fact that once we were lost, and now we’re found.  Once we were blind but now we see.  God is inviting us to a better and more beautiful life where our whole lives are lived to honor Him and His glory.  Hear the word of the Lord.

Shout joyful praises to God, all the earth!

Sing about the glory of his name!

Tell the world how glorious he is.

Say to God, “How awesome are your deeds!

Your enemies cringe before your mighty power.

Everything on earth will worship you;

they will sing your praises,

shouting your name in glorious songs.”

Come and see what our God has done,

what awesome miracles he performs for people!

-Psalm 66:1-5

CONFESSION

Just as all stories have a beginning, the story of our brokenness, our tragedy, begins with the first man. Adam broke the commandment of God, trading paradise for death. As the scriptures say,

When Adam sinned, sin entered the world. Adam’s sin brought death, so death spread to everyone, for everyone sinned.

-Romans 5:12 (NLT)

Pray with me in the underlined portions:

Lord, how long will we follow our first father and sin against your loving commands? How long will death reign among your creation?

Lord, forgive us our sin, bring us life where there is death, make us new. Amen.

I Boast No More written by Isaac Watts and Sandra McCracken.

ASSURANCE/GIVING

Hear this blessed assurance:

16 And the result of God’s gracious gift is very different from the result of that one man’s sin. For Adam’s sin led to condemnation, but God’s free gift leads to our being made right with God, even though we are guilty of many sins. 17 For the sin of this one man, Adam, caused death to rule over many. But even greater is God’s wonderful grace and his gift of righteousness, for all who receive it will live in triumph over sin and death through this one man, Jesus Christ.

18 Yes, Adam’s one sin brings condemnation for everyone, but Christ’s one act of righteousness brings a right relationship with God and new life for everyone.         -Romans 5:16-18 (NLT)

BENEDICTION

Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain. Go now in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Peace be with you.
