in Liturgy & Sermons

Welcome to Sojourn’s weekly worship music set list review & service recap. You’ll not only read a list of the songs we led, but also the readings and prayers from our liturgy. And if you’d like to see how we incorporate liturgical art and lead the responsive readings, watch the embedded video of our entire service, or check it out on the Sojourn New Albany Facebook page. Our liturgy is written by worship director Justin Shaffer in collaboration with worship directors at other Sojourn churches. This Sunday Pastor Travis McGowan preached from Jonah 2 in our Jonah series. Learn more about Sojourn Community Church here.

CALL TO WORSHIP

Good morning Sojourn and if you’re a guest, welcome! As we gather this morning let’s be reminded that though we may have come from a difficult place this week – God is with us.  Let’s hear the Word of the Lord this morning and remember his goodness to us:

1But now, O Jacob, listen to the LORD who created you.

O Israel, the one who formed you says,

“Do not be afraid, for I have ransomed you.

I have called you by name; you are mine.

2When you go through deep waters,

I will be with you.

When you go through rivers of difficulty,

you will not drown.

When you walk through the fire of oppression,

you will not be burned up;

the flames will not consume you.

3For I am the LORD, your God,

Isaiah 43:1-3a (NLT)

Song: Invitation Fountain written by Michael J. Pritzl.

CONFESSION

Most of us would confess that we want Jesus – we know that we need him, but we REALLY want Jesus plus a laundry list of other stuff. He promises to satisfy all of our needs, but we live as if he doesn’t know our needs.  Let’s pray this historic prayer together –

Lord Jesus,

We are blind, be our light,

We are ignorant, be our wisdom,

We are self-willed, be our mind,

Open our ears to understand Your Spirit’s voice

Melt our conscience and remove it’s hardness

Awaken us to the slightest touch of evil

When Satan tempts us, remind us of your wounds; that your blood streamed to wash us clean

We were strangers, outcasts, slaves, and rebels, but Your cross has brought us near

Help us to love You as You have loved us

Open our eyes to see Your beauty and be fully satisfied in You

CELEBRATION OF ASSURANCE/GIVING

If you’re feeling weak and weary today, Jesus invites you to come and receive life in him. Hear his voice speaking to you this morning:

“I am the resurrection and the life.

Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live,

and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die.

Do you believe this?”

Let’s read this together:

“Yes, Lord; I believe that you are the Christ,

the Son of God, who is coming into the world.”

-Adapted from John 11:25-27

If you are in Christ, be reminded this morning that our God doesn’t just see your sorrow and need from afar, but he knows it intimately. He experienced sickness and death as he walked this earth among us. Most of all, he is good, and he is for you. Let’s continue to sing about the God who cares for us.

PASSING OF THE PEACE

Our God is one who revives the dead, who exalts the humble, and who adopts the sinner. Because of Jesus we have peace with God as our Father and peace with each other as part of His family. Take a moment to greet each other this morning with that peace.
