Sojourn Church Liturgy Recap – June 4, 2017 – Love

by Bobby Gilles

in Liturgy & Sermons

Welcome to Sojourn’s weekly worship music set list review & service recap. You’ll not only read a list of the songs we led, but also the readings and prayers from our liturgy. And if you’d like to see how we incorporate liturgical art and lead the responsive readings, watch the embedded video of our entire service, or check it out on the Sojourn New Albany Facebook page. Our liturgy is written by worship director Justin Shaffer in collaboration with worship directors at other Sojourn churches. This Sunday Pastor Jonah Sage preached from John 15 on “love” as a Fruit Of The Spirit. Learn more about Sojourn Community Church here.

CALL TO WORSHIP

Welcome to Sojourn! We’re glad you’ve decided to join us as we gather as a church family. If you’re a guest, please pardon our mess… we don’t have any restrooms over here because we’re building bigger, handicap accessible restrooms so please bear with us… one of the connect volunteers will be happy to walk you over to the restrooms in the kids wing. 🙂

Let’s hear the Psalmist as he reminds us that though life wars against us at times, we are encouraged to remember and respond to the God of our salvation.

But may all who seek the Lord rejoice and be glad in Him; May those who love His salvation say continually, “Great is the Lord.”

      from Psalm 40:16

One of the ways that we encourage and remind each other of the greatness of God is by singing together. So let’s sing out

With Every Breath written by Marc and Christine Byrd.

CONFESSION

When we’re faced with the Glory of God and all of the riches of His grace, we can’t help but be see our own sinfulness, and deficiencies.  Pray this with me…

“O my God, I am utterly ashamed; I blush to lift up my face to you.

For our sins are piled higher than our heads, and our guilt has reached to the heavens.

From the days of our ancestors until now, we have been steeped in sin. -Ezra 9:6-7a

Jesus tells us we can do nothing apart from Him.  Let us cling to Christ and His promises as we continue to sing.

Abide With Me written by Henry Lyte and Justin Smith.

ASSURANCE/GIVING

Hear the word of the Lord, and receive this glorious assurance:

God saved you by his grace when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this; it is a gift from God. Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it. For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.        -Eph. 2:8-10 NLT

Thanks be to God! There is a sweet invitation here, don’t miss it: Our salvation is secure in Christ… we have the great privilege of doing the good things we do for the pure joy of doing them, for the reward of being with Christ, and to emulate the one who saved us! Let’s continue to worship as the giving baskets are passed around.

None But Thee written by John Fellows and Eric J. Marshall.

PASSING OF THE PEACE

We just declared that we will follow none but Jesus… Jesus and his closest friends, the disciples were marked by an abiding friendship built on the peace and reconciliation that Christ himself affected. We are also invited and called into that peace… so let’s embody that spirit as we greet each other and fellowship. 🙂

BENEDICTION

May God, who gives this patience and encouragement, help you live in complete harmony with each other, as is fitting for followers of Christ Jesus.

Then all of you can join together with one voice, giving praise and glory to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. Romans 15:5,6 (NLT)
