Sojourn Church Liturgy Recap – June 11, 2017 – Joy

by Bobby Gilles

in Liturgy & Sermons

Welcome to Sojourn’s weekly worship music set list review & service recap. You’ll not only read a list of the songs we led, but also the readings and prayers from our liturgy. And if you’d like to see how we incorporate liturgical art and lead the responsive readings, watch the embedded video of our entire service, or check it out on the Sojourn New Albany Facebook page. Our liturgy is written by worship director Justin Shaffer in collaboration with worship directors at other Sojourn churches. This Sunday deacon Neill Phelps preached from John 14 on “love” as a Fruit Of The Spirit. Learn more about Sojourn Community Church here.

CALL TO WORSHIP

Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!

Phil. 4:4(NIV)

Good morning Sojourners, esteemed colleagues and visiting guests. 😉 In Christ, all of life is an act of worship, but this is also a special place to respond to God’s call on our lives to worship him above all others as we gather together.

1 Shout joyful praises to God, all the earth!

2     Sing about the glory of his name!

Tell the world how glorious he is.

3 Say to God, “How awesome are your deeds!

Your enemies cringe before your mighty power.

4 Everything on earth will worship you;

   they will sing your praises,

shouting your name in glorious songs.”

Psalm 66:1-4 (NLT)

Song:  10,000 Reasons (Bless The Lord) written by Matt Redman and Jonah Myrin.

LAMENT:

Let’s pray together:

Lord, you have made a world that is full of beauty and wonder.

You have allowed us to know you,

To know your love and goodness,

And for that, we worship you.

And yet we know that the world is not

The way it was meant to be.

Sin, death, and suffering abound, and for them we cry,

Have mercy, Oh God.

For those who suffer disease of the body and mind,

Have mercy, Oh God.

For those who suffer injustice and oppression,

Have mercy, Oh God.

For those who have lost loved ones,

or whose family has been torn apart by sin,

Have mercy, Oh God.

May we know your presence,

Even when storms rage,

When sorrows pile up around us.

God our Maker, Christ our Healer, Spirit our Comforter,

Be near to us in this broken world.

Amen.

Song: Be Thou My Vision, traditional Irish hymn.

ASSURANCE/GIVING

Brothers and sisters here this blessed assurance we have…

And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, who will never leave you. He is the Holy Spirit, who leads into all truth. The world cannot receive him, because it isn’t looking for him and doesn’t recognize him. But you know him, because he lives with you now and later will be in you. No, I will not abandon you as orphans—I will come to you. Soon the world will no longer see me, but you will see me. Since I live, you also will live. When I am raised to life again, you will know that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you.

-John 14:16-19

Our God did not leave us as orphans! How great a truth! We have the Spirit who daily guides us, convicts, and encourages. We have the truth that Jesus is coming back and we will have perfect joy with Him for all eternity. Our God is not an absent parent, but a present Father. Let us sing and be reminded of that truth as the giving baskets are passed around!

Song Come Thou Fount written by Robert Robinson.

PASSING OF THE PEACE

Our peace and joy is found in Jesus’ death and resurrection. We also we also have unity with one another, let us greet one another with God’s peace.

BENEDICTION

As God’s children we are a people whose sorrow is turned to rejoicing. Now, “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope.” (Adapted from Romans 15:13)
