in Liturgy & Sermons

Welcome to Sojourn’s weekly worship music set list review & service recap. You’ll not only read a list of the songs we led, but also the readings and prayers from our liturgy. And if you’d like to see how we incorporate liturgical art and lead the responsive readings, watch the embedded video of our entire service, or check it out on the Sojourn New Albany Facebook page. Our liturgy is written by worship director Justin Shaffer in collaboration with worship directors at other Sojourn churches.

This Sunday Pastor Jonah Sage preached from James 5:1-6, as part of our James: Faith That Works series. Learn more about Sojourn Community Church here.

CALL TO WORSHIP

Good morning church! Each week as we gather, we begin with a Call to Worship. This reminds us that we walk through life with great purpose and meaning, and there is a God who has invited us to see that he has made us for good things.

Hear the word of the Lord-

O Lord, who shall sojourn in your tent?
Who shall dwell on your holy hill?

2 He who walks blamelessly and does what is right
and speaks truth in his heart;
3 who does not slander with his tongue
and does no evil to his neighbor,
nor takes up a reproach against his friend;
4 in whose eyes a vile person is despised,
but who honors those who fear the Lord;
who swears to his own hurt and does not change;
5 who does not put out his money at interest
and does not take a bribe against the innocent.
He who does these things shall never be moved.     -Psalm 15 ESV

Does Psalm 15 describe you? Yeah me neither!! The good news is this, Psalm 15 describes our savior, the rock of ages, perfectly. Let’s stand and worship him!!

CONFESSION

Heavenly Father, great and awesome God.
You never waver in your covenant commitment,
never give up on those who love you and do what you say.
Yet we have sinned in every way imaginable.
We’ve placed our confidence in our own plans, savings, and possessions rather than in the giver of these good things

Your compassion is our only hope,
since we gave up our rights through our rebellion.
Master, you are our God,
for you delivered your people
from the land of Egypt in a show of power that
people are still talking about!
We confess that we have sinned,
that we have lived bad lives.

Turn your ears our way, God, and listen.
Open your eyes and take a long look at us,
your people named after you.
We know that we don’t deserve a hearing from you.
Our appeal is to your compassion.
This prayer is our last and only hope:
Lord, listen to us!
Lord, forgive us!
Through Christ, your Lamb, our Lord. Amen.

ASSURANCE/GIVING

Because of the Gospel of Christ, we may be absolutely assured that our sins are forgiven by his grace, and for his sake. Let’s join our voices and declare this great creed together, trusting God to help us believe and live every word-

I believe that every thing God reveals in his Word is true.
I also believe that true faith is not only a knowledge and conviction.
It is also a deep-rooted assurance,
created in me by the Holy Spirit through the gospel,
that, out of sheer grace earned for us by Christ,
not only others, but I too,
have had my sins forgiven,
have been made forever right with God,
and have been granted salvation.
(from the Heidelberg Catechism, Q&A 21)

(…good week to pray particularly for wisdom in stewarding God’s resources for the kingdom, temperance, moderation, frugality, responsibility, that the Lord may keep our perpetual indulgence at bay)

PEACE

Beyond the assurance of pardon which is ours in Jesus, we have assurance of new life, and within that new life a newfound peace that’s a real game changer in our relationships. Let’s celebrate that reality by “passing the peace” now 🙂

BENEDICTION

The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit. [as you go in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Peace be with you!]                                                           -Philem. 25
