Sojourn Church Liturgy – March 4, 2018 – Parable of the Wheat and Weeds

by Bobby Gilles

in Liturgy & Sermons

Welcome to Sojourn’s weekly worship music set list review & service recap. You’ll not only read a list of the songs we led, but also the readings and prayers from our liturgy. And if you’d like to see how we incorporate liturgical art and lead the responsive readings, watch the embedded video of our entire service, or check it out on the Sojourn New Albany Facebook page. Our liturgy is written by worship director Justin Shaffer in collaboration with worship directors at other Sojourn churches.

This Sunday Pastor Jonah Sage preached a sermon on the parable of the wheat and weeds from Matthew 13, in our Parables of Jesus series. Learn more about Sojourn Community Church here.

CALL TO WORSHIP

Good morning Sojourners and guests it is good to be in your presence.  Let’s open God’s word together and consider our glorious God:

15 Christ is the visible image of the invisible God.

He existed before anything was created and is supreme over all creation,

16 for through him God created everything

in the heavenly realms and on earth.

He made the things we can see

and the things we can’t see—

such as thrones, kingdoms, rulers, and authorities in the unseen world.

Everything was created through him and for him.

17 He existed before anything else,

and he holds all creation together.

18 Christ is also the head of the church,

   which is his body.

He is the beginning,

supreme over all who rise from the dead.

So he is first in everything.   -Colossians 1:15-18

Let us lift our voices and worship him in song!

Song Bless the Lord (Son of Man) – Ryan

CONFESSION

I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting the one who called you to live in the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel— which is really no gospel at all… Who has bewitched you? Did you receive the Spirit by the works of the law, or by believing what you heard? After beginning by means of the Spirit, are you now trying to finish by means of the flesh?

  • Adapted form Galatians 1 and 3 (NIV)

Let’s pray together:

Father, we confess that we have looked to false gospels

We have turned to lies that say we can be a good enough person to earn your favor

We have fallen short of your glory-

Christ lived a perfect life for us

We compare ourselves to others, and condemn them for their sin, while being blind to our own sin

We have fallen short of your glory-

Christ died for us

We treat the bible as a spell book and the gospel as a self-help tool that makes us feel better about ourselves,

Forgetting that we were once dead in our sin, and were made alive in Christ by grace

We have fallen short of your glory-

But Christ was raised by the glory of the Father,

that we may be raised with him. Amen

Song Come and See – Justin

ASSURANCE/GIVING

Hear this assurance:

27 For God wanted them to know that the riches and glory of Christ are for you Gentiles, too. And this is the secret: Christ lives in you. This gives you assurance of sharing his glory.

28 So we tell others about Christ, warning everyone and teaching everyone with all the wisdom God has given us. We want to present them to God, perfect in their relationship to Christ.

  -Colossians 1:27-28

In a very real sense, our gathering is a unique opportunity to participate in and enjoy the riches of God’s glory. As the giving baskets are passed around, let us pray that we would steward the resources we pool together wisely – essentially to tell others about Christ, that we may present them to God! 🙂

Song Nothing But the Blood – Ryan

PEACE

God is our refuge… our shelter, he gathers us under his wings TOGETHER, to spur one another on, to fellowship, to encourage one another. There may be someone in here you need to pursue reconciliation with… the bible says to take that seriously… DO IT… perhaps even right now! In a very real sense, peace is our reality because of what Jesus accomplished – ENJOY that peace, that lack of turmoil as we greet one another today 🙂

Song Every Grain of Sand/Psalm 126 (Refrain only) – Nicole

READING (Read in-between Every Grain of Sand and Psalm 126 while music is playing)

God is our refuge and strength,
always ready to help in times of trouble.
2 So we will not fear when earthquakes come
and the mountains crumble into the sea.
3 Let the oceans roar and foam.
Let the mountains tremble as the waters surge!

-Psalm 46:1-3

Song A Mighty Fortress is Our God – Justin

BENEDICTION

God is able to strengthen you according to the Gospel of Jesus Christ. May your faith be encouraged, may your hope be strengthened and may your days be marked by love. This is not of your own ability, but by the power of the Holy Spirit, God’s very presence.
