in Liturgy & Sermons

Welcome to Sojourn’s weekly worship music set list review & service recap. You’ll not only read a list of the songs we led, but also the readings and prayers from our liturgy. And if you’d like to see how we incorporate liturgical art and lead the responsive readings, watch the embedded video of our entire service, or check it out on the Sojourn New Albany Facebook page. Our liturgy is written by worship director Justin Shaffer in collaboration with worship directors at other Sojourn churches.

This Sunday Pastor Travis McGowan preached a sermon on the parable of The Parable of the Coins (Talents) from Matthew 25 in our Parables of Jesus series. Learn more about Sojourn Community Church here.

CALL TO WORSHIP

Good morning everyone, welcome to Sojourn community Church. We join together every Sunday because the Creator of the Universe, the King of everything, has called us to Himself and welcomed us into his kingdom.

The earth is the LORD’s, and everything in it. The world and all its people belong to him.

For he laid the earth’s foundation on the seas and built it on the ocean depths.

Open up, ancient gates! Open up, ancient doors, and let the King of glory enter.

Who is the King of glory? The LORD, strong and mighty, the LORD, invincible in battle.

Open up, ancient gates! Open up, ancient doors, and let the King of glory enter.

Who is the King of glory? The LORD Almighty––he is the King of glory.

(Psalm 24:1-2 &7-9 NLT)

God made us and we find our home in Him. Let us sing to God with joy, for this wonderful truth.

Song King Of Glory written by Chris Tomlin.

LAMENT/INTERCESSORY PRAYER

Today churches throughout our nation are praying together on sanctity of life Sunday… We affirm that all children are precious image bearers of the living God, beautiful and valuable, worthy of protection, love, and compassion. Church, we cannot stand idly by and remain silent when the law of our land does not inherently protect the unborn – and this absolutely contradicts God’s very purpose in creating us. Let us pray for our society, that its terrible defiance of God’s will may come to an end. Let’s pray together:

Heavenly Father, may the Church defend unborn life and proclaim the Gospel’s teaching with clarity and strength to a dangerously confused world. In your mercy, hear our prayer.

May the plight of the unborn move our civil leaders to risk unpopularity and support these precious children’s inalienable right to life. In your mercy, hear our prayer.

May women considering abortion heed the call of the Holy Spirit to share life. We pray for them, in their fear and confusion. In your mercy, hear our prayer.

We pray for the conversion of doctors, nurses, and others who provide abortion services. That their eyes will be opened to the effect of their actions. In your mercy, hear our prayer.

We pray that the gospel will permeate our culture. That we may help women in frightening pregnancies in light of Gospel truth. In your mercy, hear our prayer.

We pray for the healing of women who have had an abortion: through the ministry of the Church may they find hope and reconciliation with their God and with themselves. In your mercy, hear our prayer.

Risen Lord of Life, defend the work of your hands against untimely and undeserved death. Save the unborn who bear your image, and cleanse our society of the scourge of abortion, and breath in us all the breath of new life. We ask this through Christ our Lord, who defeated death, Amen.

Song Abide With Me written by Henry Lyte and Justin Smith.

ASSURANCE/GIVING

Hear the Word of the Lord:

So then, since we have a great High Priest who has entered heaven,

Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to what we believe.

This High Priest of ours understands our weaknesses,

for he faced all of the same testings we do, yet he did not sin.

So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God.

There we will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most.

-Hebrews 4:14-16

Song My Maker And My King written by Mike Cosper.

PASSING OF THE PEACE

Work at living in peace with everyone, and work at living a holy life, for those who are not holy will not see the Lord. Hebrews 12:14(NLT)

In Christ we are made Holy before God and in Christ we have peace with one another. So in gospel obedience please greet your neighbor with a holy kiss or at least a warm embrace.

BENEDICTION

Spoken  Just as we have spoken peace to one another this morning as an expression of our worship service, we also are reminded that Jesus gives us peace. Jesus Christ instructs us to live as “sent ones”. Whether in Louisville or Montpiler. Whether a full time Christian missionary or a student. Whether a pastor or a church member. Our identity is that of a sent one. Taking the gospel with us wherever we go.

Again Jesus said, “Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you.” John 20:21
