by Bobby Gilles

in Liturgy & Sermons

Welcome to Sojourn’s weekly worship music set list review & service recap. You’ll not only read a list of the songs we led, but also the readings and prayers from our liturgy. And if you’d like to see how we incorporate liturgical art and lead the responsive readings, watch the embedded video of our entire service, or check it out on the Sojourn New Albany Facebook page. Our liturgy is written by worship director Justin Shaffer in collaboration with worship directors at other Sojourn churches.

This Sunday Deacon Neill Phelps preached from Romans 1 on “Scripture Alone” in our 5 Solas series. Learn more about Sojourn Community Church here.

Good Day (Justin)

CALL TO WORSHIP

Welcome to sojourn! Hear the word of the Lord:

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.                                 -John 1:1-5

Let us lift up our voices and sing in worship to Jesus our King!

We Are Listening (Jeremy)

CONFESSION

We live in a day that is divisive and confusing to navigate. There are so many strong opinions on ethics, politics, and theology, all shown daily on social media. We catch flaming arrows from the world who hates Jesus and His gospel, but at times we even give and receive friendly fire from our own. We need God to both open our minds to His knowledge and our hearts to His love, pray with me.

Eternal Light, shine into our hearts;

eternal Goodness, deliver us from evil;

eternal Power, be our support;

eternal Wisdom, scatter the darkness of our ignorance;

eternal Love, have mercy upon us,

that with all our heart and mind and strength

we may seek your face

and be brought by your infinite mercy to your holy presence

through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

Send Out Your Light (Janna)

ASSURANCE

Hear this word-

God’s unfailing love and faithfulness came through Jesus Christ. No one has ever seen God. But the unique One, who is himself God, is near to the Father’s heart. He has revealed God to us.                                                                                                                                -John 1:16b-18

God came down in the flesh, and displayed His unfailing love to us through the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ as revealed in His word. “God has chosen to make himself known to us, the glorious riches of this mystery – Christ in you, the hope of glory.” And our hope is found in nothing less than Jesus blood and righteousness… Hallelujah!

YEAR END GIVING WEEK 1:

A lot of churches depend on year end giving just to keep their doors open and pay the light bill. Not us. And this is a church that doesn’t get by on a small number of wealthy donors. Giving is the normal thing to do in this family, whether you have a lot or a little. This applies to many people in this room. If this applies to you, thank you. You know if you’re being faithful.

When we remember the riches of the gospel, we begin to look at our material riches in a new way. What a great invitation: we don’t have to be controlled and consumed by our money. We can use our money for something so much bigger and more glorious than ourselves.

As we enter the last month of 2017, our budget is fine and our light bill is paid up. Your regular offering and any special year end gifts can help us reach more people with the gospel, build them up as the church, and release them to the world.

Let’s sing as the giving baskets are passed around!

Your Great Name (Janna)

PEACE

Jesus Christ is the one who brings the word of peace. The one who said, “peace, be still,” and calmed the wind and waves speaks peace into our lives. Let’s greet one another with the king’s peace.

BENEDICTION

Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God. And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.                                                                                          -Col. 3:16-17
