in Liturgy & Sermons

Welcome to Sojourn’s weekly worship music set list review & service recap. You’ll not only read a list of the songs we led, but also the readings and prayers from our liturgy. And if you’d like to see how we incorporate liturgical art and lead the responsive readings, watch the embedded Facebook Live video of our entire service, originally streamed on the Sojourn New Albany page. Our liturgy is written by worship director Justin Shaffer in collaboration with worship directors at other Sojourn churches. This week’s sermon on Acts 13:1-12 comes from Pastor Travis McGowan. CALL TO WORSHIP

Welcome to Sojourn! We come together each week, united to proclaim that our God is great and marvelous, powerful and our Good Father. Let’s read this psalm of praise as we prepare our hearts to worship!

O servants of the Lord, praise the name of the Lord!

The Lord is high above all nations, and His glory above the heavens!

Who is like the Lord our God, Who is enthroned on high,

Who humbles Himself to behold the things that are in heaven and in the earth?

He raises the poor from the dust and lifts the needy from the ash heap,

To give them the seat of honor, with the rulers of his people.

Blessed be the name of the Lord, now and forever.

Everywhere—from east to west—praise the name of the Lord!

–adapted from Psalm 113

Amen! Let’s continue to worship our great God!

Song He Reigns by Pete Furler, Steve Taylor.

CONFESSION/ASSURANCE  Let’s pray together:

God of grace,

We confess that we have elevated the things of this world above You.

We have made idols of possessions and people and used Your name for causes that are not consistent with You and Your purposes.

We have permitted our schedules to come first and have not taken the time to worship You.

We have not always honored those who guided us in life.

We have participated in systems that take life instead of give it.

We have been unfaithful in our covenant relationships.

We have yearned for, and sometimes taken, that which is not ours, and we have misrepresented others’ intentions.

Forgive us, O God, for the many ways we fall short of Your glory.

Help us to learn to live together according to Your ways through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

Let us continue to sing and ask God to cleanse us and remind us of who we are in Him.

Song Psalm 51 by Rebecca Dennison

ASSURANCE/GIVING

We have been freely forgiven in Christ, and we have received every spiritual blessing from God. We celebrate this great gift together. Let’s read this word.

We are writing these things so that you may fully share our joy. This is the message we heard from Jesus and now declare to you: God is light, and there is no darkness in him at all. So we are lying if we say we have fellowship with God but go on living in spiritual darkness; we are not practicing the truth. But if we are living in the light, as God is in the light, then we have fellowship with each other, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, cleanses us from all sin.    -1 John 1:4-7

Praise God for all He has done for us! Let’s continue to worship our Father by giving our tithes and offerings to Him.

Song I Saw the Light by Hank Williams.

PEACE

The Gospel of John says:

“For from his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace.”

-John 1:16

We receive this grace together as brothers and sisters in the same family. Let’s greet one another in his grace now.

BENEDICTION  Look and wonder, Church. For our God is going to do something in our day that we would never have imagined or believed, by the mighty power of His saving hand. Go now in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Peace be with you. —adapted from Acts 12:41/Habakkuk 1:5

And also with you.
