Become A Sojourn Church Intern — All The Details Here

As many of you know, I direct the campus operations and group life for the New Albany campus of Sojourn Community Church, where Kristen serves as a deacon on the worship team. Sojourn New Albany has several key internship openings, and we’d love for you to apply. As the newest and smallest Sojourn campus, with the smallest staff, our campus offers all of our male and female interns a major seat at the table. This includes:

  • The freedom to experiment and the opportunity to gain real ministry experience, to a degree that is often found only in church staff positions rather than internship programs.
  • Regular, direct access to staff, pastors, and key volunteers — people who helped launch this campus and the original Sojourn Church, people who have written many Sojourn Music songs and performed on our worship records, people who have written SojournKids books, and served in all levels and types of ministry within Sojourn.

Our intern work room is right between my office and the office of our lead pastor Jonah Sage. You’ll work just a few feet from us. And you’ll be invited to all staff meetings, along with our three full time staff, two part-time staff and the other interns.

Our internship opportunities for the 2015-2016 season include:

Connect Leader ministry intern: you’ll work directly with me, and will provide leadership of our Connect Team (greeting, parking, ushers, coffee, etc) on Sundays and during big events, while providing administrative assistance for assimilation (Connect follow-up, membership interviews, baptism requests, etc.). This position is open to those seeking either a ministry internship (approx 20 hours a week) or a full residency (approx 40 hours a week). If we get two qualified applicants, we may take both of you — one primarily for leading the Connect team and one to lead assimilation.

Fill out the intern application and type code Connect1 under the “corresponding code” section of the application. Then please have one or two ministry references complete the recommendation form. If you currently attend Sojourn, the reference must come from a Sojourn member or leader.

SojournKids ministry intern: you’ll work directly with SojournKids Director Milli Coverdale, helping with the day to day organization of children’s ministry, troubleshooting, developing creative ways to recruit, and engaging families and kids.

Fill out the intern application and type code Kids2 under the “corresponding code” section of the application. Then please have one or two ministry references complete the recommendation form. If you currently attend Sojourn, the reference must come from a Sojourn member or leader.

Sojourn Music ministry intern: you’ll work directly with Worship Director Justin Shaffer, helping with the day to day organization of our worship ministry, playing in the band, helping write liturgy, working on song arrangements, and coordinating/scheduling the team. Sojourn Music interns can receive significant opportunities — when Kristen and I were going into the studio to record Parker’s Mercy Brigade, we turned to the internship pool and found Jonatan Barahona to lead the band and co-produce with me.

Fill out the Sojourn Music intern and residency application, and email it to jshaffer@sojournchurch.com, or email it to music@sojournchurch.com and type “New Albany campus music internship application.”

Pastoral Assistant key volunteer: you’ll work directly with Campus Pastor Jonah Sage, providing pastoral support for administrative and writing tasks, such as scheduling, planning, and editing. Pastor Jonah actually started as an intern pastoral assistant at Sojourn, assisting Founding Pastor Daniel Montgomery. Jonah is an expert in training and equipping pastoral assistants.

Fill out the key volunteer application and type code Pastoral3 under the “corresponding code” section of the application. Then please have one or two ministry references complete the recommendation form. If you currently attend Sojourn, the reference must come from a Sojourn member or leader.

Care/Counseling key volunteer: you’ll work directly with non-staff Pastor Jeremy Quillo, providing administrative assistance for our care ministry: e-mail, scheduling, and organizing.

Fill out the key volunteer application and type code Care1 under the “corresponding code” section of the application. Then please have one or two ministry references complete the recommendation form. If you currently attend Sojourn, the reference must come from a Sojourn member or leader.

SojournKids key volunteer: you’ll work directly with SojournKids Director Milli Coverdale, supporting Vacation Bible School and other big events – helping with recruiting, scheduling, creative classroom organization, ordering, and planning.

Fill out the key volunteer application and type code Kids4 under the “corresponding code” section of the application. Then please have one or two ministry references complete the recommendation form. If you currently attend Sojourn, the reference must come from a Sojourn member or leader.

Upon receiving your application and ministry references for any of these positions, a Sojourn ministry leader will contact you to set up an interview for your internship. If accepted, you will be invited to a Support Raising Intensive and Internship Orientation to be determined at a later date. If you have any questions related to internships at Sojourn Church, contact me here or email internships@sojournchurch.com.
